The Libs dont get on too well with the Tories

at one time (pre-labour) before WW1, there was no labour party and the liberals (whigs) and the tories were the only choice, along come labour.....

been to vote

there was a bloke outside with clipboard and a blue rosette (didnt actually say "conservative") asking for voting card numbers "so we dont come knocking later"

if that constitutes excerting any influence on voters within 100yds of the polling station was he acting illegaly?

They take your voting card number so that later if some one has not voted they can be called on and offered a lift to the polling station. Provided that this service is offered to anyone who requires it and not just their own supporters, then it is perfectly OK.

im not sure, canvassing isnt allowed, he had a tory rosette

i was gonna tell him to naff off and report him

If they are only taking the voting number and not asking you to vote for a particular party it is allowed.

I carried the conservative candidate from Meridian Studios to Brighton a couple of weeks ago.

I've sent her my condolences.

Election 2010: Joe Benton absent from Bootle count after losing part of finger to dog bite
May 7 2010 by Amy Salter
LABOUR’s Joe Benton was unable to attend the Bootle count after having the end of his finger bitten off by a dog.

Mr Benton, 77, who is hoping to be re-elected in what will be his 20th year as an MP, was rushed to hospital following the incident on Wednesday night.

Last night Cllr Peter Dowd, leader of the Labour group for Sefton council, held the fort in Mr Benton’s absence.

He said: “We were out leafleting and as Joe put his hand through a letter box, the dog bit his right index finger.

“He is fine and I think he is more sore that he cannot be here. We are never complacent about the outcome, but we are relatively confident.”

Counters at Bootle town hall started sorting and verifying the ballot papers at around 10.45pm, but counting did not begin until the early hours of the morning.

Bootle’s Liberal Democrat candidate James Murray said he was “realistic” about the outcome, but interested to see if he could come second

you can see why the liberals are in favour of proportional representation

Tories 10,706,647 (36.1%) seats 306
Labour 8,604,358 (29.0%) seats 258
Liberals 6,827,938 (23.0%) seats 57

a 65% turnout 29,653,638

PR would be a Living hell of hung parliaments and toothless coalitions and in many cases its the minority fringe and unhinged parties that end up with the power to dictate policy.

Far better the 1st past the post system that we already have but with constituencies of the exact same number of electorate...then 30% of winning seats would reflect 30% of the winning vote. that makes a majority win possible and fair.

Up here in scotlands parliament PR is the norm, even runners up can get a seat from a reserve pool of seats for the best losers...then once in power all you get from them is Haggling and squabbling with no agreement and the only winner is stagnation or worse..a half baked Green having the decisive vote.

It sucks...
