GMB AND RMT PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS JOIN FORCES TO DEMAND FOR A PUBLIC ENQUIRY ON THE RUNNING OF THE PUBLIC CARRIAGE OFFICE (PCO)

London’s Hackney Cab drivers and Private Hire drivers are joining forces in their demand for an inquiry into the running of the Public Carriage Office (PCO) which regulates the London’s mini cabs cabbies and black cabs. Both sets of drivers are unhappy with the PCO’s structure and position on many issues concerning the industry in the Capital including:

1. How Private Hire drivers who are unable to speak English are able to pass the vital typographical and other tests and checks.
2. Why the ban on driver safety shields when drivers are regularly attacked and even killed in their cabs.
3. Why fit CCTV cameras in vehicles with no sound recording?
4. Why does the PCO alert Private Hire Operators offices of the dates when they will carry out regulatorary checks which gives the operators time to sort out paperwork and conceal any illegal conduct such as the hiding the employment of unlicensed and illegal drivers?
5. Driver standards. The killer on the ‘Knowledge’ was already a badged PH driver.
6. The too comfortable relationship with the major Private Hire Businesses.
7. The PCO’s acceptance of poor standards of driver paperwork.

Terry Flanagan, GMB National Organiser of professional drivers said, ”Both sides of the London Passenger Trade, mini cabs and black cabs, joining together on the vital issues of the running and standards of the PCO will be a much stronger force than from just one which would be attacked as been biased towards one side or another.”

Eddie Lambert, Chair of the RMT London Taxis’ Branch said, “By coming together on these specific issues we are letting the PCO know we are not going to be ignored by them and we will force them to address the flawed way that they operate. We will challenge the entire PCO operation as it is currently structured. Public Safety is too important to be used as a political play thing and we are a demanding a PCO that is genuinely fit for purpose.”

The RMT have nothing to do with the GMB, you know that, both unions may well want a review, but they will not work together. The RMT will have nothing to do with the GMB. Do you understand? Spin all you like but those are the facts. I suppose you will tell me I want a 40hr week next?

I actually think this was a good move, and IMO only the brain dead could think it was a bad move.

Brothers together in battle. :D

That's why trade unions don't represent much more than around 1700 drivers out of 26'000 licensed individuals in London.

Folks just got bored of all the Socialist bumf they trotted out about brothers in Cuba and what was going on at the Hackney Labour group's freedom for Lesbian adoption campaign.

Why?

Because you have a fixed version of what you think is right and who's to blame.

And nothing is going to change that view point.

Thats out of date and you know it, keep on posting it but its out of date, it caused problems at first, but the members had a meeting (like they do every month) and changed things, so now we will pursue our own review, do you understand yet?

You can believe what you want, but I didn't write that press release.

That said I happen to also believe working together will get you further than not working together.

But it appears you would sooner fail than be seen to work with the other side.

Principles dictate that we want nothing to do with the other side, and why should we fail? the RMT is hardly unable to conduct its own affairs (like the LTDA)
