i have a friend thats just about to get his taxi license,his problem is he has lived near where he going to work for the last 12 odd years but doesnt know every road in the town where he will be based, will he be ok using a sat nav? he passed the knowledge fine just not sure on all the roads yet |

he will learn faster WITHOUT a satnav, all he needs is the A-Z |

not even sure if the firm he is gonna drive for will let him have a satnav he never asked them! i know off a local firm that has satnavs in all there cars i think thats where he got the idea from to begin with |

I often use my satnav as just as a map. If you know the rough area that you are going to you can usually see the street that you want on the satnav. |

Sat nav will help, but it doesn't always point you in the right direction. Still we all have to start somewhere.

Red book from the newsagents tells you all the local streets. It will be the best £4.99 he's ever spent. |

The problem with this idea is the information on a satnav doesn't really sink into the memory like it does if you use an A to Z. Satnav's are good if you are going out of area imo |

as a driver (van and 7.5t) from pre-GPS days i dont miss lugging 50 A-Z's about with me (or paying £5-£10 a time for them, i dont need a satnav to find manchester (or the airport) but once out of area they are handy and you dont see so many drivers reading A-Z's at the services now..... |

We use "on board" one touch sat nav to pick up in our newer despatcher. My take on it? Almost ironically, it takes an experienced driver to really get the best out of it. More ironically, most of the experienced drivers don't want to use it. 
Having said that, the way this one works, a new chum can step in and find each pick up without any experience within reasonable times so on balance, it has helped our response times as we do have a fairly high churn of drivers, perhaps 1-2% per month which was creating response time problems. |

Wouldn't be without my sat nav. It doesn't work 100% of the time but nor does my knowledge. Between us we make a great team. |
