Post subject:  Problem with garage
I had problems selecting gears in my aging Peugeot 406 and took it into my normal garage for repair. Been told that I had two choices, new clutch for short term use or rebuilding gearbox at great expense.

Took the option for the clutch and now been told that the immobiliser has kicked in because of the battery being disconnected and they can't move it. They've arranged for a transporter to take it to main dealer for fixing and I'm fearing the worst.

Where do I stand with the costs involved as it obviously didn't go the initial garage with an immobiliser problem and should this have happened mechanically.

Nightmare situation, but surely it shouldn't be too hard for the immobiliser to be reset. :?

If the garage caused the immobiliser to immobilise then they are liable for the cost of resetting.

I do believe it is a common problem with pugs. If they are not repaired by recommended garages they don't know how to reset things, thus making it a necessity to send it to a registered garage once the repair has been done. Unless of course you know a mechanic that works for a Peugeot garage :wink:

cobblers

rebuilding a gearbox never repaired a dodgy clutch, fitting a new clutch never repaired a knackered gearbox

its EITHER the gearbox or the clutch, cant be both at 1 and the same time

get it to someone who knows thier trade

your immobiliser will be reset by the main dealer, if thats the problem

Well.........theres always the remote chance that we Might breakdown somewhere near "Calamity and Jammits" garage and inadvertantly call upon their services and end up Immobilised just like you....Ya Never Know!!!!

My guess (assuming the clutch bites ok, no slipping, no juddering) would be:-


1. Linkages
2. Gearbox selector (internal)
3. Synchro's
4. Bearings (does it rumble in neutral)

Is it all gears or 1-2 2-3 3-4

if the main or lay shaft or bearings are gone you can pin down which by what gears are easy and which are not and in what sequence (up? down?)

what model exatcly is your 406? how many miles?

has the gearbox oil ever been changed?

Do you mean like one of those diagnostic computer thingy bobbins and surely that is all it does :?

Some code readers can do the immobiliser but not all, and if you buy a car with only 1 remote, dont lose it, or its recovery and recode, £200+
