A Carlisle man has been arrested after police received reports that a taxi driver touched a local teenager passenger’s leg.

An investigation was launched after officers were informed that at around 4am on Sunday morning (17 October), a 17 year old female from Carlisle got into a white car at the taxi rank outside the Las Vegas Strip on Portland Square, Carlisle.

During the journey the driver reportedly made inappropriate, suggestive comments of a sexual nature and touched the passenger’s leg.

The female panicked and jumped out of the moving vehicle in the Garlands estate area. She hid in a nearby garden and watched the vehicle drive around the area.

A 39 year old man from Carlisle has been arrested on suspicion of sexual touching. He has been placed on police bail until 23 November 2010 pending further enquiries.

Detective Constable Rachel Carruthers who is investigating, said: “We have launched an investigation and are appealing for anyone who saw a white taxi car leaving the Portland Square taxi rank or being driven around the Garlands area during the early hours of Sunday morning to contact us.

“The young woman is very shaken by the incident and has cuts and bruises as a result of jumping out of the moving car.

“The Garlands estate is a residential area that would have been very quiet at that time of the morning. We need local residents to think back – were you disturbed by a car at around 4am on Sunday? Did you see anything out of the ordinary or a vehicle acting suspiciously?


“I’d appeal to anyone who thinks they may have information that can help us, to contact me or anyone in Carlisle CID on 0845 33 00 247.”

Here is another scenario, young teenage woman who should not have been drinking, jumps out a moving white taxi, because she was skint and did not intend to pay, driver spends a few mins trying to find her
She decides to make up the story about the driver touching her

Thats a terrible thing to suggest.......you are probably correct.
