Carnation Milk; 65 Years Ago
Mary Merriman, a little old lady from Wisconsin was the owner of a dairy farm that produced hundreds of gallons of milk every day. She had worked on the family dairy farm since she was old enough to walk. Hours of hard work and little compensation finally paid dividends when she inherited the farm at the ripe old age of 84.
Shortly afterwards canned Carnation Milk became available in grocery stores. This was in the 1940s and about that time she read an advertisement offering a $5,000 prize for the winner of a Best Slogan Competition to promote Carnation Milk.
The producers wanted a rhyme beginning with, 'Carnation Milk is best of all.'
Mary thought to herself, I know all about milk and dairy farms. I’ve been in the dairy & milk business for over 80 years!
I can do this!
So, she sent in her entry!
Several weeks later, Mary was tending to her dairy herd when a big black limousine pulled up in front of her farm house.
A man got out walked over to her and said, “I’m looking for Mary Merriman; is she here?”
Mary replied, “Well that’s me.”
The man continued, I’m from Carnation Milk. Carnation just LOVED your entry in the Best Slogan Competition to promote our product!! We LOVED it so much that we are here to award you $2,000, EVEN THOUGH WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE IT!”
