Lawsuit Claims City Doesn't Provide Enough Wheelchair-Accessible Cabs
The city is facing a class action lawsuit that alleges it's violating federal law by not providing enough wheelchair-accessible taxi cabs.
The lawsuit claims that only a fraction of the city's wheelchair accessible taxis are available at any one time.
Of the city's more than 13,000 taxis, only 200 can accommodate wheelchairs.
The plaintiffs are not seeking any damages, but the suit comes as the Taxi and Limousine Commission is in the process of choosing a new taxi model for the next decade.
Only one of the three designs being considered is wheelchair accessible.
The TLC says it has made strides in improving transportation for the disabled, but points out there are no laws requiring cabs to be wheelchair accessible.
