Taxi drivers protest across Poland

Taxi drivers are protesting in cities across Poland on Wednesday against the government's plans to relax the regulations for entering the profession.

Columns of taxis blocked five routes in the capital on Wednesday morning, driving at especially slow speed so as to create havoc during rush hour.

The protests went ahead owing to Justice Minister Jaroslaw Gowin's plans to eliminate the obligatory course and exam that taxi drivers must take to enter the profession.

“Representatives of taxi drivers' organizations believe that the deregulation of their profession is a bad idea,” said Michal Wieckowski, Chairman of the Solidarity National Trade Union of Taxi Drivers, in an interview with Polish Radio.

“It has to be a profession that can count on public trust,” he added.

Later in the morning the drivers will converge on parliament.

In the south-western city of Wroclaw taxi drivers are to protest outside the headquarters of the regional government.

Minister Gowin's prospective reforms are part of a wider programme of deregulation that takes some 49 professions, ranging from tourist guides to sport instructors. (nh)

Polish taxi drivers threaten Euro 2012 disruption

Organisers of Euro 2012 are hoping protests by taxi drivers and others won't spoil the party

Taxi drivers have brought several Polish cities to a standstill in a protest over government permits.

The drivers say they will hold further protests during the Euro 2012 football tournament next month if their demands are not met.

Poland's government wants to liberalise the regulations governing several business sectors, including taxis.

The drivers say this is a threat to their livelihoods, and blocked streets in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Gdansk.

The main protest, in the capital, saw several main roads and bridges blocked through Wednesday morning, and ended in the afternoon in front of the parliament building.

The government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk has antagonised unions with his drive to liberalise the economy.

A number have already said that they might use the Euro 2012 tournament - which Poland is co-hosting with Ukraine - to further their causes.

But there is still hope that may be averted. One of the organisers of Wednesday's action told the Reuters news agency: "We are all football fans - so it really would be a last resort."

So the government licenses the Polish taxi driver.

Law Commission take note.

I bet there's no PH in Polska.
