Over the past few months I have been trying to get a rise in the fares around here. There were a few of us talking between jobs last night. The subject of running costs came up. There was one chap who has been in the trade for donkeys years. He is a one man band but he usually has 2 or 3 cars. He changes vehicle several times during a shift. His latest purchase is a brand new Peugeot E7, he says he paid over £30K for it. I asked him how many miles it does to the gallon, what are the servicing costs etc. He said he hasn't any idea. he does't worry about such things. I asked him if he has any idea how much the vehicle costs to run and he hasn't a clue. Another guy said that if he puts £30 of fuel in his vehicle at the start of the shift and he takes home more than £30 then he is making a profit. I had to bite my tongue.

Maybe they both get big Working Fake Taxi Credit payment's so they don't need a profit from their businesses anymore

I know what you mean though Pops, it's frustrating isn't it, I've been there many times before, ask for a 20p increase and then listen to the wise men go........ooooh no you'll kill it stone dead, they won't pay that y'know, truth is they've no place in the industry tbh, they'd be better suited ironing trouser seams in some tongue to ass type job, i'll do that g'vner, can't do enough for a good g'vner types.

sadly if you were to conduct a proper survey I would say that probably 30 to 40 % of drivers have little or no idea about their running costs all they know is how much cash they want at the end of the week for beer and fags

I did an exercise with a group of drivers that used to sit on the car park while they were waiting for a job, they didn't speak to me for week after cos I'd depressed them

i can quote chapter and verse on running costs, standing/fixed costs, fuel per mile, tyres per mile, depreciation, income tax/vat and when (if) i make a taxable profit

sadly it makes SFA difference to actually MAKING a profit or, more importantly the REAL question

"Would i be better off in a PAYE job with holiday pay/SSP/pension/bank holidays/NMW"

(and no fecking petty minded ass licking stupid rules)

Meant to ask you about that statement, which seems a bit bizarre, but thinking about it for a minute or two I know one or two like that. Well maybe not in precisely the same boat, but they don't really need the money, and just do the job for something to do. There's also a sort of 'look at me' element about them, which is why they do things that to the vast majority of us doesn't seem all that rational.

As I said some of them don't need the money, so they're not really that concerned about the details of how much it's costing them.

On the other hand, there are some who pretend not to know things like running costs, but that's all part of the bravado as well. A bit like Blackpool claiming nobody's bothered about plate values there :---)

It's like these guys on the ranks who laugh at others who're getting uptight about something or other. They say people shouldn't bother about these things.

But one day the mask slips and all is revealed. It's all been a big bluff.

Often it's the ones who say they aren't bothered about these things that are the ones to watch. 8-[
