Drugged cabby won't drive taxi again

A LOCAL taxi driver who took drugs, taunted passengers and locked a child inside his cab after a quarrel will have his license suspended and won't be allowed to drive a taxi again, said city traffic authorities yesterday.

The driver is being investigated by police and the city's taxi watchdog, the Shanghai traffic law enforcement team, demanded that the company apologize to the passengers and improve supervision of drivers.

The authorities did not disclose the name of the driver. The taxi is owned by Shanghai Punan taxi company.

It's the first time in recent years the city traffic authorities have reported punishment for drug use by a cabby. An official said they won't "let a black sheep stain Shanghai taxi reputation."

The incident raised public concern after a passenger, surnamed Zhu, said on Weibo that on the night of February 17, two of her relatives, a senior citizen and a child, took the cab in the city's downtown Puxi area.

Zhu said the cabby began to taunt the passengers after the senior accused the driver of not taking the right routes. As the dispute escalated, the driver stopped the vehicle and locked the child inside, with the senior outside, said Zhu.

Zhu posted the pictures of the taxi and the invoice on Weibo, which were later confirmed by city traffic authorities.
