Last night I was watching the local PH depot guys forming a queue on the road and there guys just ushering in passengers without any bookings in to waiting cars. I'm a bit concerned as I'm sure they're supposed to go into the office or whatever and make some sort of booking before they get in to cars, otherwise they're acting like illegal hackney carriages, plus I'm sure the insurance is invalid, nit to mention the safety aspect. Can anyone point out what laws are being broken?

ive always wondered about this and ive been a taxi driver twenty years :D

a local ph firm has the contract for the local casino and their drivers just pick up whoever comes out have done for years and nobody thinks twice

with supermarkets and what not a phone call is usually the way in a nightclub or a casino it never is.

Pretty much most of them.

Check out your local operating requirements, whether jobs need a name and destination before despatch.

Ask your LO if he thinks things are being done within the law and if not what actions is he taking to ensure the laws are being kept too.

It will be war if we did that, but I did anyway!! Mr Sussex is right, I've outlined the scenario to taxi licensing and will be interested to see what there reply will be.

If there isn't a rank outside their office then the taxis would be illegally plying for hire also. I worked at a firm with a similar scenario but the LO said they had to write down all info before the passenger was allowed in the vehicle, having said that it went on for years before that requirement was made. The office would usually ask the base man how many vehicles he needed and they would send down the vehicles via the data dispatch system but no names were taken and all destinations were 'As Directed'

Yeah I'm inclined to agree with you and the fact that the operators cannot be bothered to do their jobs properly

They can't use that as an excuse, they know they have make a booking first and then let the car move, otherwise they are just picking up off the street.

What about everyone's safety?

What if another ph competitor wanted to move in?

Not if all the Hackney boys had some swingers and got together and ranked up outside the office.

If they're not causing an obstruction they can rank up anywhere, all they've got to say is I'm on a booking. Problem sorted.

Come on you know they can't rank up anywhere and if there are several of them outside the same place I don't think anybody would believe they are all on a booking. You can't say it's wrong for one side of the trade to do something but it's ok for the other side to do it when it's just as wrong.

Turn top signs off and whala job done, they can't lock them up for plying for hire.

Surely that would then make them 'cherry pickers' You cannot advocate illegal behavior to suit your needs even if the other side of the trade is acting illegally, it just don't cut it
