go back tommorow

happened to me last week, went back, guy got stroppy and threatening, but I kust smiled, stayed calm and kept my cool (black belt in tae kwon do), stood my ground and he paid up, was only £9 but it was the principal, if you don't have the cash, don't take the cab, walskings free afterall.

Take a friend with you on collection, they are unlikely to get nasty if there are two of you.

Come back tommorrow!!!, the fare then becomes a civil debt, me I would have left the meter on and got the cops out, no matter how long I have to wait and get em charged, oh it was only 9 quid, 9 quid is 9 quid, try buying some fuel or any item at Tesco's and say, oh I'll pop back tommorrow to pay.

It's a crime, nip it in the bud,

It depends on the circumstances - although I'm a blackbelt in oragami, if someone is swinging a baseball bat round their head then I'd be inclined not to press the issue.

And using the p-word can often just inflame the situation.

The criminal offence/civil debt distinction is also a tricky area, especially since it's more often than not the precise law that's relevant than whether or not the police are interested in doing anything.

But in general terms I think that if the person never had any intention of being able to pay the fare there and then and doesn't tell you this beforehand, then it's a police matter, in theory at least.

But if they discover they've lost their purse when you get them home, then it's a civil debt.

I agree Pete, meant I went back for a small amount, not a large fair, I too would have gotten police, he tried to close the door, I opened it, he said he'd get the Police, I said yes please, as I was taking chap home, we tried 3 different banks and he couldn't get money, i took him on trust, as was last fare for me, and five minutes from home, got stroppy when I returned, it was all I could do to stop my self from diving into his home and taking it out on his face, I would do the same for £2.20 (min hire) or £220, it's a principal thing!!! and as you say a civil debt, rsoles!!!!

I'd enjoy that, relish it even, would give me reasonable cause to thump them, baseball bat is slow and weildy, easy to disarm, he has to take the thing away, before he swings it towards you, and both hands on the bat, so easy to get in close and deck the sod, but as I say, I have trained for this for many many years :D

In this instance I would go back tomorrow, and you could charge for the return trip if you thought you could get it.

As for the non-payers there are two general rules. If the punter got into your motor, and at the end of the trip says she has lost her money or doesn't have enough, then that's more times than not a civil matter.

But if she got into the car knowing she didn't have any money, or tried to do a runner, than that's a criminal act. Section 1 of the Theft Act 1978.

Who do you call in this situation, local police number or 999?

I can sympathise with you there Bigyin, however one doubts the legalities of the CS spray, but the torch good idea as i know you need it to see the numbers in the dark so a perfectly good reason to have it from a legal point of view. Like i say i do agree with you and know where your coming from but just look at the legal implications
