My new car (not a taxi) is petrol but it surprises me how well diesels hold their value second hand

I too after 30 years of only ever driving diesels have switched to petrol partly because modern fuel emission systems are difficult to fix once they go wrong but also because worldwide diesel seems to be increasingly difficult to source and is consequentially becoming expensive

If I had to buy a car now it would be a difficult choice

We do very few miles with maybe 2 long runs on holiday, so its a choice...

550 miles
55mpg diesel at £1.90/ltr
40mpg petrol at £1.65/ltr

probably not a lot in it

There’s a garage near Whitchurch (Essar) which has its own tankers selling diesel for £167.9 at the moment. Luckily enough I pass by it twice a week and always fill up (I put a shot of millers ecomax in as well, works out at £1.50 a shot but I’m still saving the best part of £10 per fill)

£165.9 today :D

Essar are an Indian company and so they are probably successfully bringing in laundered cheap Russian crude or are refining it in India and exporting to the UK

That’s why I always put a shot of millers ecomax in when I fill up here, as well as running it on vpower over the weekend.
