Post subject:  Driver Shields
We are having problems getting the PCO to ok the fitting of driver shields,these protective devices are OKd by all authorities other than Ipswich,and the PCO ,can anyone supply information on the use and fitting of these devicies.Would be particularly interested in details of these devices proving usefull.
ORGANISE EDUCATE AGITATE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Security

23. The owners and drivers of vehicles will often want to install security measures to protect the driver. Local licensing authorities may not want to insist on such measures, on the grounds that they are best left to the judgement of the owners and drivers themselves. But it is good practice for licensing authorities to look sympathetically on - or actively to encourage - their installation. They could include a screen between driver and passengers, or CCTV. Care however should be taken that security measures within the vehicle do not impede a disabled passenger's ability to communicate with the driver. Licensing authorities may want to encourage the taxi and PHV trades to build good links with the local police force, including participation in any Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships. My previous car, an Octavia came supplied with one and I used it Friday / Saturday night and removed it during the week. It did make me feel safer but I felt restricted re moving my arms etc and there is the false sense of security to look at - the brakes don't lock the rear doors like a London Cab, so its easier for runners. I admit I never asked whether I was "allowed" to use it - I just took it out when I felt I didn't actually need it to be there; I suppose I saw it like a dog guard - its not a permanent fitting in the vehicle its only used, like a kids seat, on an as and when basis. To the LO's that don't allow use of them - do they allow drivers to wear stab vests? Bet they have never been asked and wouldn't know how to respond! If it protects you and makes you feel safer while doing your job no LO is going to stop you using it! Basically to stop you using a drivers shield in a saloon car is like tellin al TX / E7 drivers that they have to remove their bulk heads and you know what the answer to that will be.............

There's a guy at drivershields (I think thats the name of the firm), they were advertising at one point in taxitalk magazine, I suppose you could give them a call.
