Hi Just joined your forum and I must say it is of great assistance and knowledge. I have checked out some other taxi driver forums and to be blunt they are pants, compared to the information available on here. I am based in sunny Manchester, so much of this forum is more relevant to drivers in London.
A little about me then. Ok New badge (Passed the knowledge test first time, so quite pleased about that), Owner driver and just going through the stages of Insurance and LA plates. I will need some advice from the more experienced members though. I have worked as self employed before in a different trade, so know most of the pit falls. One of my first thoughts is in relation to joining a trade union. I have read some quite heated threads on here in relation to GMB etc So, who if any is the best to join up to.( I am based in the NW) Also, any advice on insurance issues. Is it a good idea to take out a public liability policy and if so any recommendations. Now, living and going to be working in Manchester. I do know that from time to time i will bump into the odd rough character. My other half has said it may be a good idea to wear a stab vest under my shirt when doing a night shift. Is this a good idea or should i just hand over some cash if a knife is pulled. Any tips on how to protect myself would be grateful. I did hear about some ex rugby player who was killed as he was working as a taxi driver by some smack head out on probation. He knifed him in the neck during the struggle and sadly lost his life, leaving children behind
A good friend of mine works the doors in Manchester and he has a legal can of spray called "bouncer" think you can get it off ebay for £15. He says it has saved him a few times in a tight spot. Anyway, hope to get to know you all soon. Take care. John |

All taxi/PH insurance will come with a certain amount of public liability. That's why it cost so much.

No, you've read some heated threads about the man who 'heads' the GMB Drivers section. At least it will help you make your mind up about what union you would like to join, by judging the professional behaviour that has been displayed by certain Union representatives. |

Thanks GBC and skippy for your good advice. Sussex, i have come across many muppets who dont take safety at work seriously. I have had the misfortune to be on two building sites where people were killed, due to the lack of their own personal safety. In relation to the stab vest, No i don't need to find another job i need to keep myself safe in the job i have. Like any Health & Safety issue, prevention is better than cure. I am playing catch up here at the moment. Could someone please enlighten/elaborate on the free issue plate and then use as P/h in another LA. You mention a 'test case'. Is there no current case law for this? Cheers |
