We've all been given the nonsense about restricted authorities operating a so-called double shift system and how it benefits the public over an unrestricted system. Well here is the evidence that these guys are talking through their backside. This is Altrincham Town centre at five to three on a Friday morning. Trafford's Main Taxi rank situated in the Town centre and directly outside the Station. Note the time on the clock and not a cab in sight. The person who took the pic waited 30 minutes to see if cabbies turned up to offer a service? You guessed it, they didn't.

. Nor anyone else by the looks of it.
I'd be on my way home as well if this was the scene that greeted me. |

It just goes to show how effective the double shift system is, 3 o'clock everyone home in bed, job done...

lol, some interesting replies but I thought the double shift system meant that cabs were available all through the night, regardless of who was out and about? It would appear to me you guys are suggesting that the T&G, NTA and NWTA or NTTG whatever you want to call them, were having us over? It would appear that TDO was right all along when it said "drivers won't hang around when there is no work to hang around for", regardless of what system is in place? If any picture spoke a thousand words, that is surely it. Regards JD |

You're right, the system obviously works well, so if it's not broke don't try to fix it.

Regards JD But what happens if my friends and I come out of the building facing the Taxi rank and we want a cab? Do we hang around until one comes or start walking? Regards JD |

![]() lol but wouldn't that constitute unmet demad and defeat the purpose of restricitng hackney carriage numbers if private hire had to fill my demand? I thought the T&G etc, told us all that double shifted cabs cured unmet demand? Regards JD |

Nice photograph, although a little blurry. The cabbies were possibly having their emissions checked, they like to do that kind of thing in trafford, you'd have possibly had more chance of a cab if you went to the service station. regards CC |

Regards JD So you're arguing that ranks should be fully manned 24 hours a day whether there is work or not............. somehow I don't really think anyone would accept that as being reasonable.....

![]() I'm not arguing anything of the sort, I'm drawing the conclusions of the real world and the unreal world, which is part and parcel of the propaganda spoken by those who live in the unreal world and I have no need to point out who those people are? Do you recall what Mr Damien Edwards of Liverpool City Council told us about the double shift system? “I have a fear that if you increase the number of hackney carriage drivers there will be no surplus to double-shift vehicles, and that may impact on the availability of taxi cabs at peak periods, despite having more vehicles. Or Mr Roger Sealey of the T&G I was talking to somebody today who was saying that there is significant unmet demand at night now because taxi drivers are working the day shift and there are not sufficient working the night shift because the market has been derestricted. And our dear old friend Mr Peter Kavanagh who said: It is very much the case that in areas like Manchester and Liverpool that now have a restricted system there is what we call the double shift and even sometimes three shifts in a day, so that vehicle is actually "used around the clock". So its patently obvious that these people were talking about cabs working around the clock as Mr Kavanagh points out. I don't know what your opinion is now? But we certainly knew what it was then? If you would like to put a different spin on the double shift system and explain what you think it means, then by all means do so. Regards JD |

JD A great many people have put points of view across, they have put them across in their own way , I am more than sure they have formed their opinion one way or another, Damien has been in the Liverpool licensing department since he was a boy, and lived through the farce of Liverpool being D-reg, I'm sure he is quite capable of looking at Birmingham which is D- regulated, I think you know the city, a city where people cannot get licensed vehicles late at night, and un-licensed vehicles are out of control. To me the picture you have shown is proof of a first class Taxi service the , everyone home in bed including the Taxi drivers' when their work is finished. they seemed very professional. |
