Does a 16 seat mini bus used as a taxi bus need to be licenced and plated as a taxi???? and have a meter. The reason I am asking is our council has done this and has told the owner that he had to remove seats as well. The owner has a PSV so I feel that the bus comes under that roof and not taxi rules Could he run the bus legally as both without the need for a taxi licence???? |

The council are only authorised to licence a vehicle up to 8 seats, greater than 8 seats and it's a PSV licence he needs, when you say taxi bus i assume you mean as licenced by the PTE? |

He obviously wants it licensed as a taxi and because taxis can't seat more than eight the council has told him to take seats out. We had a similar one in St Andrews for a few years - a big Transit with some of the seats removed. It wasn't the smartest vehicle around and the drivers called it the "berry bus"

The owner has a PSV so I feel that the bus comes under that roof and not taxi rules Could he run the bus legally as both without the need for a taxi licence???? The vehicle is either a psv or a Taxi it can't be both. If it is a Taxi then he only needs to apply to the local Transport commisisoner for a special restricted license to operate a bus service. Cost I believe is around 53.00 pounds. Regards JD |
