Hairdressers get most generous tips

Nine out of 10 of us regularly leave tips, but give an average of less than 10% of the bill, a survey has shown.

About 89% of people often leave a tip worth about 8.5% of the bill, nearly half the 15% that Americans typically give, according to private bank Cater Allen.

People are most likely to leave a tip in a restaurant, at 76%, while 65% would tip a taxi driver.

Just under half of people give money to their hairdresser, leaving an average of 11% of the bill, meaning hairdressers get the most generous tips, followed by waitresses who receive an average of 10% of the bill.

But only one in four people would consider tipping someone delivering a pizza and just one in five leave money for a chambermaid.

At the same time less than one in 10 people would tip a concierge, cleaner or beauty therapist.

About 28% of people have even asked for automatic service charges to be removed from their bill.

Only two thirds of people think their partner is a generous enough tipper, while 31% of people claim they have left an additional tip when dining with someone because they did not think they had tipped enough.

many REGULAR taxi users don't tip it is usually the ones that only occassionally use taxis that tip

I personally find the people from the less well off districts tip better than the ones who think they're "posh"
