Give up the fags Captain, FFS!!!

I know it's hard; I was a 100-120 a day man over 40 years ago, but will-power, Polo mints and 15 months later I had given up.

You can do it too!!

And you're still alive?

Particularly in view of the fact that ciggies were more dangerous in those days, I think.

Actually must be quite difficult to smoke that volume per day.

Not really, they were shorter then and had no tips.

Actually must be quite difficult to smoke that volume per day.

Chain smoked about three to five at a time, lighting the next one off the last one.

Only smoked tipped ciggies towards the end; before that it was plain and mainly Chesterfield King size (my favourite ciggies), Philip Morris, some Lucky Strike, Camel, Gitanes, Gauloises, Capstan Full Strength (with the nicotine stains on the cigarette paper as you pulled them out of a brand new packet) and ocassionally 555’s.

But my all-time favourite smoke was a Romeo y Julieta Havana cigar!! Absolutely fabulous smoke!! The size I used to smoke in those days are probably over £20 each today.

And when I went to parties it was usually Sobranie cocktail in the five different colours.

Then when I was trying to wean myself off the bloody things, which took about 15 months, it was Consulate menthol ciggies.

Oh, how stupidly impressionable and vain I was then!!

But I only smoked for about three years or so and it's not a part of my life that I'm proud of.
