Law Commission, United Trade meeting... By Mike Bailey

On Wednesday, May 16 the RMT hosted a further United trade meeting and this time with representatives of the law commission

Once again we find that for the second time some representatives from the taxi trade unfortunately did not appear. It is sad to know that following calls in Taxi Magazine for a united trade recently, the LTDA failed to appear, once again closely followed by the LCDC.

We will not attempt to try to understand the reasons behind the non-appearance of these two groups suffice to say that members of the above named organisations and taxi drivers all over London can draw their own conclusions for the second snub.

RMT and other groups that were represented at the meeting today are now able report back to the rest of the trade that this meeting was hugely successful

A full set of minutes taken at this meeting by the RMT are available.

A whole range of issues were discussed and the atmosphere at the meeting was more than positive. We were informed by the law commission team that they wish to take information from as many groups as possible. Members of the RMT can rest assured, that the interests of RMT and members from other groups in attendance were strongly represented at this meeting. The flow of information from the trade to the law commission and vice versa can only go to assist with the huge job that is to be undertaken by the law commission

This exchange of information can only be helpful when organisations such as the RMT put forward a final submission at the end of the consultation period in August.

It is very important that a full understanding of how the trade in London works so the very important task of reforming taxi law leaves no grey areas but a clear understanding by both sides will hopefully produce strong and credible changes to the fragmented law that we are working with and bring about positive change that will have a meaningful effect on issues such as enforcement and produce clear lines of demarcation.

We were assured by Richard Percival, that his team wish to receive as much information as possible from the trade to be able to understand all the issues that are at stake. A great deal of work was undertaken by members of the RMT London taxi branch law commission committee to ensure that a comprehensive and factual presentation was given on behalf of the trade, it was agreed today by the law commission representatives that they will undertake further visits to avail themselves of more information to help them understand the trade more fully.

My thanks are extended to Richard Percival and his team members of trade organisations that were in attendance but special note of thanks must go to members of the RMT London taxi branch that have given so much of their own time and hard work to ensure that today's meeting was a complete success

Michael Bailey chair RMT London taxi branch 0930

You make a good point.

Today I was in a meeting with a number of good taxi/PH folks.

Also at the meeting were three reps from a taxi firm with about 300-350 vehicles, most of them hackneys with £40-50,000 plate premiums.

Not one of them had read the report, and they were surprised, nay shocked, that others had. ](*,)

People truly get what they vote for. :(

I'm quite sure a few from the trade would volunteer to push.

But things are unlikely to change much in London, at least from the taxi perspective?

But presumably their main concern will be the premium and the derestriction proposal?

Thus they've probably dismissed the whole report as rubbish on the basis of the press release.

depends how aggressive PH become I guess - I seriously think a few of them will be peeking around the surrounding areas looking for those that license saloon hacks - as I've already stated - I think Addy Lee would love his cars to have taxi roof signs - just to p*ss off the london cab trade.

But they could do that already, presumably?

And presumably there's nothing proposed by the LC that would facilitate that?

I'm basically going from what Griffin said during the bus lanes carry on - he seemed too keen in my view on the LC.

I'm not too sure about London law - in respect of ph they can use operators outside of London - but vehicles and drivers without going through an operator?

I would presume the same for taxis, although I dont have a scooby tbh.

Of course the standards thing will upset them - particularly with emissions and suchlike - I wonder how that will work? If a LA decide to set emissions which would include PHV's - then that policy via the govt - would affect the rest of the country?
