I noticed tucked away in the editorial in PHTM that the law commisssion people will be attending the Coventry show and be available to talk to drivers about the various issues here is a golden opportunity for those of us with something to say to have our say

Also they have an economist as part of the team who is interested in hard information about drivers earnings so for those on here who earn very little again an opportunity to influence the reccommendations


What do the rest of you think ?

I think you're possibly right, but, I doubt many will take advantage of such an opportunity Are they there each day of the show or just one day?

Imagine it, 200 mile journey to have someone shake their head to you in agreement for 5 minutes then go do exactly what they'd intended anyway, if opinions are wanted then every license holder should be sent a form to fill in, then the tea lady can read through them and decide what's best before advising that any cab that is more than £1.10p is too expensive, and any cab that isn't a E class isn't big enough, and that any cabby who doesn't lick her boots throughout the journey should be put in stocks and pelted, and that a cab should be stationed outside her house at all times ready for that big journey she takes once a year to get her eyes tested at NoVision Eye Clinics.

Research your questions and put them to the Law Com at the show.

Makes perfect sense.

Gentlemen (and ladies) you don't need to travel to the show. You don't even need to get out of bed; because the Law Commission will be bringing a consultation paper right into your very own homes via the "voodoo magic" widely known as the Internet. It is due to appear on a screen near you sometime in April/May of this year and everyone can have a say. Just be sure that you respond and make sure all your mates do as well.

You mean they'll actually be listening to cab drivers?

Rather than the 30-odd desk drivers at the 'advisory group' meetings?

Well I don't think I'll be bothering 'having my say' if past experience with official consultations are anything to go buy; spend weeks on a contribution and think yourself lucky to get an acknowledgement.

I think this time it will be different.

The people looking at our trade are the people who will be drafting any new laws.

That's quite a step on from OFT.

Where you might be right is that things might already have been decided, and the motions are being gone through.

To some extent a lot of it will have been pre-ordained by the Government's remit.

And it probably won't have taken them long to decide on the bigger issues.

Of course, there's a lot of detail involved because new legislation will be required, which is where the consultation may have some influence.

But on the big issues I suspect it's already a fait accompli

Of course, Parliament still has to pass any legislation, and that could be whole new ball game entirely.

So perhaps you could advise how many working drivers attended the advisory group meeting?

I was led to believe that there were no currently working drivers on the group, and indeed your own sole contribution in the minutes lent support to that view, but in any case I apologise for any offence caused.

When reading the minutes I do actually recall thinking that the word 'operate' could be interpreted in different ways, but it was the second sentence which led me to believe that it was meant in a sense other than as a driver in the sense I meant it.

And he's right, what is the driver going to do, take the full price no discount job or sit hoping the drunk cheapskate is going to show up, oops I forgot they already do don't they, it's called pirating.

All over London lines of PH rank up outside clubs that have a clipboard loitering outside asking everything that moves if they want a 'taxee'.

All under the nonsense called 'satellite office', otherwise known as touting.

Do you have clipboard johnnies Patrick? Do they conform to the law by remaining inside the venue?

I have come to the conclusion that the PHTM exhibition will be quite a scrum for the LC table and probably a bad time to talk to them as they will not be able to absorb all of the information being fired at them and as the only thing I am in the market for at the moment is a couple of radios which is one trade that is ALWAYS missing from the exhibition I won't bother

I think a written submission is probably the best way forward
