In many areas the only people who can make a living taxi driving now are those who have many children. Whats he on about, some of you ask.

It's quite simply maths and subsidy really. If you are renting a taxi for say £250 per week and gross takings are £450 (less fuel) leaving nett pay around £120 for a 40/50 hour week.

This is not a living wage. Now comes the job creation part, If you are unskilled and have 4 or more children, the government will pay you an additional £300 -£400 (sometimes more) to call yourself a self employed "businessman"

In this particular example, there are many variations on these figures, the main beneficiaries are the owners renting out the cab, which is in effect paid by the state, and of course the renter who can earn more than the dole for sitting about all day chatting with his/her mates.

He's bang on right Mr Grandad!!!

Take one licensed brummie cabbie [NO ME], but living in Dudley. He is about 30 years of age and has four kids.

He only wants to work 16-20 hours a week and that's all he does. He wants to spend the rest of his time with his wife and family!!

And that's what he does!!!

Guess who tops-up his wages??

That's right, the government!!

Is he the only one?

Of course not; there's an army of them out there!!

This is the real world of government handouts to the self-employed, because who is going to prove otherwise as far as the guys working hours or earnings are concerned!!!

One guy came to renew his permit in May this year and brought his bank statement as proof of address - £320 he was getting.

Concooned away in a remote cul-de-sac, most people in the country don't even know it's going on, or the extent of the abuse!!

And are the recipients of government hand-outs in the HC and PH trade going to discuss what they get with the likes of you and I?

You bet they aint!!!

To a degree he is right.

Why are taxpayers subsidising owners who charge too much, and operators that do likewise?

Our trade should stand on it's own two feet, and not have to rely on taxpayers to meet our bills.

There's a guy round our way like the one Brummie mentioned, he's got 4 sprogs and a dragon for a missus who doesn't work. He's milking the system for all he can and is getting a right payday for doing so off the Government. He's the only driver round our way who can afford 3 holidays a year abroad in Turkey with his sprogs in tow.

Mr Doom,

To celebrate TDO's eighth birthday admin has reactivated a load of accounts that have been banned, for a number of reasons, over the years.

So welcome back, please behave, and could you please edit your location?

Alex
