Well I'm not that sure they are on their own, by wanting to impress visitors.
That's the problem with this trade, stuck in the past with Victorian rules, and in some places Victorian clothes.
Some PH/taxi operators have dress codes, and drivers can either adhere to those rules, or go elsewhere.
If you are picking up the dregs from the pubs and clubs, clearly it doesn't really matter what you wear. But if you pick up from posh hotels, or do pukka work, then you shouldn't look like a bag of poo.

The choice is yours.
I suppose thats a dig at York eh?
the visitors wont have to walk far too see people dressed as vikings, and yes they do dress in victorian costume for............the visitors yes York do try hard
or are you talking about the GNER uniform yes victorian, but they stand out..............
we are 4 years into the millenium and dont realy think its incumbent on Sussex drivers to say how northerners traditionally because of our textile past, better dressers.
I dont think York drivers are scruffy, certainly not the biggest wearers of denim which up here are overhalls, except those are now the dress of clothes sales personell..
incidentally telling some areas taxi drivers how to dress is likely to run into racial backlash,
GNER are wrong about this sussex, and so are you.
and its improper to tell taxi drivers how to dress, many being self employed, the situation with private hire companies is with respect a different issue, it is a marketing ploy is it not?
I do wonder what you are getting at when you mention victorian costume
with regard to what is a debate about dress in an historic walled city?
