Not much to see here, but check out the description of the driver highlighted below

Whoever wrote this seems to have missed the point of a dual badge, and makes it sound like they're driving an HC and PHV at the same time. While also driving a 'taxi'

Of course, potentially all sorts of issues worth discussing in terms of how officials can revoke under delegated powers and in secret, effectively. Nice of him/her to 'consult' the elected licensing chair, though, which I assume simply means that he/she let him/her know what had happened

An Ipswich taxi driver has had their licence 'immediately revoked' after a serious allegation was received by the council.

Ipswich Borough Council announced last week that they revoked the licence of a hackney carriage private hire taxi driver.

The decision was made on February 16 and was made by the Head of Public Protection.

Council documents stated: "A serious allegation has been received by the Council against a combined hackney carriage/private hire driver.

"The allegations mean that the driver is not able to meet the criteria to hold a licence within the Council's Private Hire and Hackney Carriage Policy therefore the driver’s combined licence was revoked."

No alternative options were considered by the council and the chair of licensing and regulatory committee was consulted.

The council declined to reveal the nature of the allegation in their report or to this paper.

This announcement follows discussions surrounding the responsibility for taxi and private hire licensing being held by the council.

The Department for Transport has proposed that the responsibility for granting licences for taxis be given to a local transport authority instead of local councils.

The issue mentioned at the end there was covered by the Ipswich Star last week, but I didn't bother posting it on here because it didn't seem that interesting and, like the article above, was a bit of a non-story.

It's actually very slightly more interesting than I thought, at least in terms of how it's reporting that the council is also stating the obvious. And potentially an interesting discussion point as regards how councils respond to stuff like this. But life's too short

Discussions surrounding the responsibility for taxi and private hire licensing are set to be held by the council.plans

The Department for Transport has proposed that the responsibility for granting licences for taxis be given to a local transport authority instead of local councils.

Ipswich Borough Council is set to discuss the proposal this week and have outlined three potential responses.

In the Department for Transport’s proposal they outline benefits to the change which include consistency and speed of licensing.

With one authority governing across the country, it means all taxi drivers have to adhere to the same set of rules to receive a licence.

While Ipswich Borough Council outlined the transition would bring some benefits, they felt if the change was made it would come at the risk of the new authority and the council becoming misaligned.

However, another proposed response - to ignore the consultation and not respond - was ruled out due to fears it would look like the council didn’t care.

The first option to respond and engage with the proposal was chosen - after a third response of creating a new proposal was ruled out.

It would have been nice to know the nature of the allegations.

Not saying council has jumped the gun this time, but it wouldn't be the first time a council has.
