Taxi licence refused for Irvine man who assaulted womanhttps://www.irvinetimes.com/news/259153 ... ted-woman/AN IRVINE man who was convicted of assaulting a woman by 'pushing out two of her teeth' has been refused a taxi driver’s licence.Robert Campbell, 59, appeared at North Ayrshire Council's Licensing Board earlier this week, where he claimed the incident was "a genuine accident".
The committee heard that in July 2021, Mr Campbell was convicted of domestic assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
They were told that he put his hand around her throat and pushed two of her teeth out from the root to her severe injury.
He was fined £200 and given a non-harassment order for three years to refrain from contacting or attempting to approach or contact the woman.
Police officer Sgt Gray told the board that he felt Mr Campbell was “not a fit and proper person to hold a licence” in light of the above circumstances.
Mr Campbell responded: “I was found guilty. It was a genuine accident and if the police had done their job properly I would not have been convicted. I have mental health issues and need to get back to work.
“I could get references from customers I used to pick up that I am not violent and never have been. You can’t push someone’s teeth out.”
But Cllr Christina Larsen proposed refusing the application, saying: “We have taken into consideration the objection from Police Scotland very seriously and it is obviously a very serious conviction in our eyes.
"I propose we refuse this application under being not a fit and proper person.”
This was seconded by Cllr Donald L Reid and unanimously agreed by the board.
