Uber driver drank wine on his shift and found with cocaine in his system

Police spotted Adam Daley driving suspiciously along Vaughan Way in Leicester and pulled him over. He's since been banned from driving after admitting the offences

An Uber driver has lost his licence after being caught working while high on cocaine and with alcohol in his system, too.

Adam Daley, 33, had been on duty and driving along Vaughan Way - Leicester's inner ring road - at 6.30am on Monday, December 29, when Leicestershire Police officers spotted him and were concerned about the standard of his driving.

They pulled his white Toyota Auris over and carried out a breathalyser test, which he failed, showing him slightly over the drink-driving limit.

He was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and the officers, concerned there may also be drugs in his system, ordered blood tests to be carried out.

After being sent away for analysis, the blood tests showed that he was slightly below the drink-driving level at the time the blood was taken at the police station.

But the tests also showed he had in his system nearly five times the legal levels of cocaine derivative benzoylecgonine. He had 240 microgrammes in his blood and the legal limit is 50 microgrammes. He was also over the limit for cocaine itself.

Prosecutor Eleanor Watson said that at the time of his arrest Daley had seemed "unsteady on his feet, with glazed eyes and slurred speech".

Ms Watson said Daley had nine previous offences on his record, including a theft offence from 2015.

Addressing the latest offence and the fact he had been drinking as well as taking cocaine, she said: "There is alcohol in his blood and it doesn't need to be over the limit to be treated as an aggravating feature.

"He explained [to police] it was towards the end of his shift and had consumed some tonic wine but had not taken any drugs."

Daley, of no fixed address, was represented in court by Roshni Modi.

She said her client didn't usually take drugs but had been taking cocaine two days before. She added that after losing his licence he was hoping to return to the construction industry.

The chair of the bench, Lynda Eaton, told Daley: "We are concerned because of the drugs in your system and the drink in your system and that you were an Uber driver."

The magistrates banned Daley from driving for 20 months. He was fined £200 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
