Carol's Cars

A FEMALE only taxi firm has been set-up to provide transport to lone women and vulnerable people fearful of getting into a cab with a male driver.

Former social worker Carol Moynihan has formed Carol’s Cars with Jane Suart and Bronwen Pitman to meet a demand for women drivers to take people home at night.

She told the Daily Post she was suggested the idea by a serving police officer who was concerned about his daughter getting home from clubs and pubs at night.

Professional singer Carol, 50, of Penrhyn Bay, Conwy, who became a cabbie eight months ago, said: “There is a demand out there for female drivers from other women who are worried about getting into taxis with male drivers.

“There are also vulnerable people who would prefer to be taken by a female driver and we want to meet that demand.”

Carol had been driving with a local firm for six months when she went to renew her licence with Conwy council after Christmas.

She said: “I was at the desk when a police officer asked if I was a taxi driver.

“I said ‘yes’ and he suggested I set up my own company because he was worried about his own daughter getting home at night in taxis.

“I knew a lot of people in similar circumstances who felt the same way and thought, why not?”

She went about setting up the business and has now brought in two women drivers with plans to expand further in the future.

Previously Carol worked as a social worker at Conwy council for five years and is also a professional singer.

She said: “As a social worker I had to find transport for vulnerable people and found it very hard to find female drivers for some clients and this was worrying because in many cases these people were very vulnerable and potentially at risk.

“This is another area where I think we will do well.”

She added: “With my training as a professional singer and a social worker I will also be able to provide support and entertainment to my passengers!”

Despite being aimed at women Carol insisted men were not excluded from getting their taxis.

She said: “This is not a female only service although of course we will at times be wary about who we pick up so we don’t put ourselves in potentially risky situations.”

Why bother with all the CRB checks etc if nobody trusts them to spot unsuitable people for taxi driving. All this stuff about being safe in a taxi is so repetative and contradictory. On the one hand they are saying make sure you get into a licenced cab or ph then on the other hand they are saying it's ok to have all lady cab company for the females that want to get home safe, it's bollox

Surely this must be breaking the law on the grounds of sexual discrimination.....no employer could ban a woman from working for them...yet these women have effectively banned men from working for them...

How sexist is that???????

There are some exceptions allowed in law but I'm not sure if this is one of them I think perhaps it is

I know quite a few people who don't trust asians.
How far do you suppose any of them would get setting up a "whites only" taxi service?

only if they recruit, otherwise they havent

3 women started a firm. end of. wheres the discrimination?

if (IF) they proceeded to the full base/radios,etc, they could still get round it.

I think perhaps somebody who has the time and patience to look up the discrimination act may find the answer to the questions raised here. I'd volunteer but I may be considered bias :D
