Is it a 'fare' rule for taxi drivers?

Tuesday, March 09, 2010

Should taxi and hackney carriage drivers be allowed to show their support for England by wearing football shirts during the World Cup?

Today we are asking for your views after it was revealed a new dress code for drivers – which comes into force on April 1 – would see any driver donning a football shirt risking their licence.

As reported, the dress code was approved last year by North East Lincolnshire Council's Community Protection Committee, after discussions with a working group.

Chairman of the Hackney Carriage Association, Dave Atkin said: "There was a working group set up to discuss various aspects of the job, including qualifications, ages of cabs and dress code.

"Rather than introduce a uniform, it was decided to exclude clothing such as flip flops, ripped jeans and sports wear. We are trying to improve the image of taxi drivers and get rid of the image of drivers in string vests."

However, drivers are unhappy they will not be able to show they are backing the England squad.

Simon O'Neill, 38, said: "I think it is a disgrace. We are supposed to be self-employed. We should be allowed to wear what we want so long as we are clean and tidy.

"We should be allowed to wear the strip with the World Cup coming up."

You're double post sounds like Michael Winner in the spoof YouTube Esure commercial.

Because you like football shirts & casual wear for cabbies.

Does that include wearing football stips, tracksuits and trainers, worn out jeans etc?
If so methinks a big fat no no..... :-|

Was that a deliberate mistake Brummie, do you know something we don't

Asides that I think support for the England team could be just as effective with an England flag slapped on the rear window or one of those ones that attach themselves to the door and wave frantically in the wind as you drive

I'm sure the dress code includes polo shirts, if so why not show support in one of these?

Covers all the bases surely?

I think that drivers should dress smart casual. If you start acting the part then you will get more respect from the public, instead of the rag bag that we sometimes have out there.

If you want to support your team then what is wrong with a tasteful St George flag ( Queens vehicle type) being attached.

Some years ago when Station Taxis in York introduced a dress code of shirt and Tie, one of the drivers started wearing a chauffers cap black gloves and got out and opened doors and saluted people in an attempt to take the p88s as a result he received more tips than he had ever had so it goes to show people appreciate a smart polite driver.

No doubt this is the first of many threads we will see this year about football shirts, and I expect to see the flag issue done to death too.

Everyone will get hot and bothered, but it will all end up nicely when England win the World Cup. :D

Doesn't matter what you wear as long as you are clean and well turned out.
