Same in Kirkcaldy 70 Hackney plates and over 100 private hires. Never a chance of derestriction happening here no room in ranks for the exisiting plates as it is. Hassles with Traffic Wardens all day every day due to overflowing ranks. All these lads who want deregulation should have a look at themselves they are the ones full of self-interest buy a business like awbody else (or do you have bad credit)

100 PH against 70 Hacks?
Still no demand?
Get a grip.

Get a grip of what mate your the one that needs a grip!! One Ph company has over 30 Phs and does the vast majority of local contracts (NHS and Social Work etc). The rest of the PHs are used by smaller companys (ie one man bands with a hack and a Ph) Rest are used by people employed elsewhere and only come out on a Saturday FACT. There is only one main rank in the town that holds 18 yes 18 cars where do the rest go yes round and round the circuit. Lets see lets open it up and make everything hacks where does the 170+ cars all go. Aye mate GET A GRIP

70 hacks driven by how many drivers?
Why would a guy with a hack also need a PH car? Unless the taxi is double shifted out.
How hard is a taxi driver's licence to get in Kirkaldy? or do they hand them out to anyone with a licence?
What sort of vehicle standards do you have for hack and PH?

Taxis (and PH cars) don't make a living from the trade - Their drivers do.
So do their non - driving owners where their numbers are limited.
Every driver needs to earn more to pay their rents.
Plenty of drivers means owners can charge even more, since there is always someone else who will pay it.
Make a driver's badge harder to get and you limit the real competition - too many drivers.
Renting is far more expensive than owning, otherwise why would owners bother?
Every driver with his own cab needs less money every week to maintain the same level of earnings.
If you take the owners noses out of the trough, there will be more left for everyone else.
Where numbers are limited, the owners call the shots. They do so in the way that suits them, not the way that suits drivers. Takings may be down but I'll bet rentals are still the same.
It also sounds to me like much of your work has gone to the PH because, unlike hacks, they are not limited. You need to take this work back.
If you have more PH than hacks, there is a demand there which PH has filled for you. You can compete for it or sit on a rank blaming the other hack drivers, that's up to you.
BTW, at least here a PH driver needs to pass the same knowledge test as a hack driver.

Blame too many cabs if you want, but cabs don't earn a living. People do.
Take a look at who is making money - and who is earning it for them.
You may discover that you are carrying the wrong kind of passengers

We have over 1000 hacks and rank space for around 5% of them, with just under 300 PH. That's 1 PH for every 3 - 4 hacks.

Must be a city thing this renting malarky. Here in Kirkcaldy there are very few drivers especially on the dayshift most of the hacks are driven by owners/operators. Renting does not go on here. One car hacks have a ph vehicle to assist them with their own phone numbers but most are used on a Saturday night or for school runs etc. The big PH company have many drivers and are up to no good most of the time as you call it seagulling on Sat nights etc. The big hack company that has the black cabs have drivers on most of their vehicles. Hope that answers your question

Not on the hack plates mate was 2 couple of years back that the same lad used to rent out but the lads couldn't make it pay. (too quiet)
The big Ph company through here are renting out their cars to individuals (who are not registered as Operators) who then advertise for drivers in the Job Centre

Kirkcaldy cabbie - What do you drive? If you don't mind me asking.

Also, have you any idea why there are purpose-built cabs working KDY, but in Rothes there are only cars? Always wondered why...

Does it drive itself?
Standard of vehicle must be very low if one night of phone calls and a school contract makes it viable. :?

Was thinking that myself. Methinks were not getting the full picture here.

I can understand the viewpoint of Mr Kirkcaldy and his ilk. But they must also see the other side of the coin.

Why should one driver be treated differently than another? Why should folks outside of the trade see us as a cash cow?

There is money in it but not fortunes, hence the reason why its Operators driving and not drivers. Most cars make about £70 a day off the Tesco rank from 8 am until 6pm. Some days less some days more just your luck. There is a big shortage of Drivers in the town always plenty for a Saturday night but the bread and butter stuff nope eusasmiles.zip

I drive a Ford Mondeo mate. There is only one Company that has the purpose-built and they make their money with the baby buggies.

If that's the case, you'd be better off selling up for £40k and running a PH with a mobile phone.
