You may not be smiling for much longer after my conversation with the station master on Thursday, he told me that we are now allowed to wait for customers at the front of the HC rank if and when there are no 20 minute parking bay's available. We are also allowed to drop there too, don't they charge HC's to use that rank? :D

I will also be working with the powers that be at the station organising a new PH pickup/drop off area, hope this news keeps you smiling :D

Happy Easter

We were encouraged by our local Council to pick people up at the bus stops on the way back into town, they told us to charge people their bus fares. It soon stopped when the little old lady said I get half fare.

Is it legal to pick up at bus stops?

As long as you park before or after the bus stop you are OK. We asked this when the licensing officer suggested it.

I see the Norwich lads don't think a pound a ride is the answer to their credit crunch woes. =D>

Poke your £1 a time

Town for a pound scheme.

Photo in the Lincolnshire Echo link of Mr M making abusive hand gestures.

As stated on my other posts, legality questioned by council.

Never got off the ground, thankfully.

So, fair comment really?

You had the "right to reply" then, Mr M, why did you not take it up?

A bad idea, I thought, and so it proved.

so where do we stand on a County council dept (ostensibly pupil transport) seeking bids for a service (almost a ring and ride) to carry from 1 village to a bus stop (when reqd) "passengers will ring"....

no distinction between PH or HC, fares per passenger...plus a subsidy off the CC

I had this idea years ago, in Gateshead we used an orange circular badge in the windscreen to identify cabs participating in the scheme.

The rules are simple.

The law states that you must get permission from the initial hirer to collect further hires during the journey. Although we suggested that by stopping a vehicle with an identified mark from a specified place any initial hirer would be, by that action, giving permission for other passengers to be collected.

With regard the ammount charged, Sussex is right. The meter must be started at the first hire and no more than the shown fare can be charged, however experience tells me that where 7 people are collected and £5.60 is charged everyone still pays their £1 each and the excess is given as a tip.

The other aspect is that the journey must follow the most direct route back to the town centre, therefore no detours for people who want to go elsewhere. The scheme is to allow cheap travel into town, that is all.

I would say that if you don't want a "argument" regarding legality then you register the route with your PTE, as you only need to define a start or end point you can designate a bus stop in the town centre (or bus station) and you will be given access to it.

Remember bus deregulation happened years ago, they cannot restrict you from providing a public service ......................... providing you hold all the relevant licenses ..................... and a HC falls into that.

Some lads up here never went to the ranks ................... they just went back out to the sticks where they knew there would be people waiting and brought them into town ................. better than sitting on the ranks all day.

Oh and with a 7 seater vehicle its not into town for a quid ............. potentially its into town for £7.
