The reason we have extra charges for unsociable hours is to encourage cab drivers to work.

No one has said there is anything wrong with charging more for unsociable hours. It seems only the taxi operators in the paper extract[Quote Graham Grey] But when you get a council who are leading on it they should be supported by their own licensed taxis. The operators just give out the work they aren't the ones who are out there at 2am taking the drunks home.

Nearly every driver is an operator here and everyone is out, work is passed from car to car in the same company by radio (mobile offices)
there is only one company who use pdas

I see, & you think it would be Turkeys voting for xmas??. I supect that if you cut the cab fare in half you would have the same number of jobs per day anyway. I know a PH operator that discounted a third off his return airport runs, he still quiet.
Would he of had the same number of jobs if he left the [already low]prices as they were?... yes or at least 90% of them. He has discounted for no gain or increase in custom. He is the cheapest Airport transfer company around & he has very little work. I would even go as far as saying if you increased by more than the council rate you would still do the same amount of jobs per day! Its false economy to cut rates, all you do is get more aggro from customers later on when you HAVE TO increase the rate. Look at the rates in London, ok there is a bit more cash flowing there but its all relative. If a London guy gets picked up from Edinburgh Airport he will think its good value even with your new rate increase due to the fact that he is used to paying twice as much for the same service.

Being a one man band, i could cut the fares in half, then clean up, as most drivers have to do as the bosses say, and folk here love a bargain
