Both buses and lorrys get caught up in traffic jams and accidents and manage to live with the delays that these cause. At the end of the day if it is decided that taxis and private hire are to go the same way we as a whole will have to adapt and work within the system.

And thus work the more profitable hours?

There will be no such thing because you will all be on an hourly rate.
No more self employed, everyone on the books.

I hope many join you and leave all the work to me, might even mean some drivers actually get a life.

What would be wrong in having drivers employed on a proper hourly rate and working proper shifts of say 8 hours with a maximum of 6 shifts a week?

Nothing, and the sooner idiots stop working, or having to work, crazy hours the better.

But if most drivers worked the profitable hours, that will lead to the so-called un-profitable hours becoming more profitable.

The problem we have at present is that drivers are doing both the profitable and the un-profitable hours, leading to drivers working more hours, leading to drivers working more hours.................................

Imagine the joy on your Customers face as you tell him your having a 45 minute break or that you cant drive an further cos your times up...that will really fech up his day and pretty much fech up yours as well.

Tachos are fine In trucks and busses where the routes are pre planned or regular, but they are no use at all if your work is sporadic, instantaneous and which could take you anywhere in britain without notice.

Nope. wont work, and besides Imagine the taco card after a day hopping in and out of the motor..It'd look like CD that someone had spilt ink over...

er, no it wouldnt cos its digital now.....chip'n'pin...

When a lorry driver gets to his destination he puts the taco onto stopped or unloading and the same when he gets held up in traffic especially on the motorway when they do this they still have the time that they would have had if they had not been held up or had to unload
so when you hit the rank put it on loading and it will automatically change when you get a fare so you could actually still work 14 hours in one day

And when the so-called un-profitable hours become more profitable, that will mean that at these times there will be a dearth of cabs, so those LAs that have stopped issuing HCV licenses will open the flood-gates again.

This hurts my head. There is never going to be a win/win situation for taxi drivers. If it can be got right for the majority can't we just be selfish it's easier :?

But..if it encouraged more to work those profitable hours those same profitable hours would have so many vehicles working them that they become unprofitable hours...then the crap ours where drivers have no hours left to drive will become the new profitable hours instead...then all the all the drivers will go chase those hours...its a bit of a catch 22 is it not?

nahh...I'l PH from home and just be a tad more selective as to which jobs I take on. and even after all the rules and regulations people will still get killed by Taxis now and again, or bus drivers or HGVS or car drivers, or trip over Granny shuffelbottoms tartan shopping trolley..accidents will always happen so why do we need over regulated at massive national expense for something that will make little differance at the end of the day.

Once more we the People will Meekly do as we are told, without argument and in blind obedience to the government who treat us all as children.

The way I see it is this scenario.

You have an area with 100 taxi/PH working 80 hours picking up 24,000 customers a week. (based on two punters a job, 20 jobs a day, 6 days a week, although the actual amount doesn't effect my scenario)

If a new law came in saying drivers could only work 60 hours a week, you would then have 100 taxi/PH working 60 hours a week picking up the same 24,000 customers a week.

In other words punters wont disappear and drivers will be a hell of a lot busier during those working times, no matter when they work.

Also the part-timers, if they have a current other job, will no-longer be able to cherry pick, which could mean full-timers being even busier.

Call me blonde or whatever but I just can't get my head around all this stuff. The way I see it (which I think is quite logical) is if I work 10 hours a day and pick up 3 jobs an hour and I was then told I could only do 8 hours a day, I'd still pick up 3 jobs an hour and I'd still be 6 jobs short of what I needed to earn my living

But the reason you are only doing 3 jobs an hour is because there are other drivers doing the rest of the work.

If they all can't work at the same time then you will be busier when you are working.

Your argument is fatally flawed... you would need 25% more drivers to cover the missing hours because the flaw in your argument is in assuming that the customers are going to want Taxis/Phs to fit into your 60 hours scheme. (the 25% being the other 20 hours youve taken from the 80 hours)

C,mon....we live in the real world here (most of us) so less hours means less money, customers will never condense their Taxi/Ph requirements to suit us!! so the 25% Vaccuum has to be filled by more drivers and or vehicles which means more competition chasing the same 24,000 customers..and as a result those 25% newbies will be wanting some of that work that YOU are are already doing so as they too can make a living.

Damn, if it was so simple do you not think we already be doing your 60 hours already... :?
