Your right Dagger, I dont cherry pick, all hires are done as they come in, If I am not able to take them there and then, they are told a time, they either accept it of call another firm
If I have bookings and someone comes to me between them and asks to be taken on a long hire I say sorry I am fully booked.
I have as of last week changed a few things, I now give a pound off 24/7 with a min charge of £2.00, this is now displayed on the top sign instead of the side of the cab, as there are that many cabs with adds on them folk dont pay attention to them but they do look at the top signs, this has had the desired affect with an abundance of work, folk just jump in no matter where I am on the rank takings up by a third, if I take a hire from our rank to Asda the fare is £2.60 the punter gets charged £2.00 but that is £2.00 more than the rest have.
I have the mentality (not the section one lol) of if your wheels are not turning your not earning, hard time call for drastic action
Cherrypick is not always a bad word Skipp, what I mean is if you can then moraly and legally you and us can sometimes choose between jobs to suit your earnings or your time, probably not cab's on ranks though. We have a cover screen which of a night when less drivers work the screen can display jobs in the next available area and a lot of time they are regular jobs so you have an idea of destinations so I could bid for one rather than another to suit myself, that's what I mean by cherrypicking.

25% discount to generate 9% more work don't seem like a success to me.

Some might therefore suggest that the fare tarrif is currently set to high and the council should reduce it.

I would suggest your suggestion is correct CC, I have had to change things slightly as one of the larger firms and a smaller one, started giving a pound off, so I now do this 24/7
The council sent all operators a love letter wanting us all to attend different venues on the 19th of July, to discus this years fare rise they have sent a copy of the new proposed tariff sheet showing a £0.10p increase on the start rate and a reduction in the meterage from 107 to 105 meters per click, and as most owners dont charge the full fares they are waisting there time

Lets say for arguments sake that the council agree to this and they reduce the rates to the level that Skippy is charging. There would be a big splash in the papers stating how taxi fares have been lowered. Now unless Skippy lowers his fares even more, the first punter in the car will be complaining that the fare has not in fact been lowered.
