This is hypothetical but what would the government do if all the fuel company's decided to stop selling it until the tax was halved

And why would they want to do that?

Well look at it this way, when the price at the pumps is high they sell less, as folk tighten there belts, so to make more money they need the price as low as possible.
I think by them not selling it it would take no more than 3 weeks for the government to cave in

People have commented that Asda fuel is so cheap cos it wrecks engines-allegedly

I have done over 80,000 miles on Asda diesel no problems with it and for some reason getting better mileage

My 406 has done 317k most of it on Asda fuel!!

Except that the oil companys say that they don't make any money from pump sales which would mean that they would be happy for us not to buy the stuff.

That's probably true, at least for garages who I think only make about 1p a litre profit. Except for the supermarkets who sell it at cost or a slight loss.

However it's not petrol/diesel that the oil companies make their money on but the by-products. Oil is used in many products, paint, tarmac, medicines, plastics - the list goes on. This is where the oil companies make their profit.

They couldn't store the stuff, and with the cost of stopping and re-starting production being prohibitive, I don't think that's going to happen soon.

Cheapest near me now 136.9p esso guildford, all the rest 137.9p probably go up again in a couple of weeks.ps im pleased to hear comments that asda fuel ok and still working good at high mileage,a number of posters on this site last year claimed it was so cheap cos it lacked extra additives needed for longevity and smooth running of engines.shame I havent one near me,sounds the best value at the moment
