the council has documented evidence of the bespoke insurance that has been written especially for the club.

What kind of bespoke insurance would that be and what would it need to have in place to be legal

They were on 'Woman's Hour' today on Radio 4. I didn't hear all of it but the most laughable bit was that because, unlike taxis, they use modern digital technology, instead of radios, this makes them safer. That means they shouldn't be forced to have licences!!

Listen again or podcast available on Radio 4 website.

Would that be the same digital technololgy that us HC/PH drivers use :? Does it really matter how you receive your work you still need to have a licence surely. I can't understand how they've managed to get away with it for so long myself :?

I think the whole item was intended as a publicity stunt before it goes to court. Warrington apparently refused to take part in the programme because of the impending court case.

Have a listen on the BBC website.......

The question is, would any normal company put their entire business at risk this way in the misguided belief that public support somehow exempts them from the law? What’s even more surprising (or not) is that one of the owners turns out to hold a doctorate in law!

Now I didn’t know that, but it probably explains why the company chose this obscure route. But if you think about it, any lawyer worth their salt would probably be running a successful law company rather than a small taxi company trading on the edge of commercial viability.

Bill :)

But wasn't the firm set up before the law was changed to outlaw businesses operating on a 'club' basis like the Pink Ladies?

The powers that be clearly thought that they had found a loophole, otherwise they wouldn't have moved to close it.

Equally clearly the Pink Ladies thought that the loophole wouldn't be closed when they set themselves up, which in the context of taxi legislation wasn't a bad call at the time.

But now that the law has changed fundamentally they've got a problem.

And one that's now going to cost them much more than it would to be licensed.

If I might add my two Penny's worth................. pink ladies was set up as a lady's own club, if they have to be licensed they will not be able to refuse male customers, and you might also remember, that they have sold franchisers in other areas,
This case in court might well be bigger than people think, it might well question whether or not this government was right to change the law or even have the power to do so.
I am probably wrong.... but who knows...

So why can't they be licensed and continue as a club if they want to get round the sex discrimination laws?
