I'd like to see a limit on all licences not just hackney carriages. These private hire firms that keep taking on drivers to line their own pockets without any regards to whether drivers are earning enough money just don't know when to say NO if asked for a set. When I approached the firm I work for they said ask the licence dept. to restrict plates. Pardon me but that's a load b*^^*^ks. Since we were derregulated, or whatever you want to call it, our private hire system is now flooded with Hackneys, me thinks somebody is taking the p. I just wish that all the drivers whether they are PH or HC would work together to make a fair system for everybody, I mean there must be one. The only people making money out of this game at the minute are companies and the licensing dept. who incidently are crying poverty here.

With regards to first aid training, they could train me until they were blue in the face but I'd still just dial 999 cos if you do something wrong they'll sue you when they're better, it's just not worth the risk.

You will never get a limit on PH....indeed the way things are going there wont be any limits on HC's eventually.

Most of the post criticises PH operators......the power to deal with them are firmly in the hands who pay rents.

I dont think your LA will be making any more money after delimitation than before it....indeed they aint supposed to make a penny, its non profit making.

So if I get this right, in terms of the plate restriction, it was a meeting about the next meeting, giving the LO the power to investigate the costs of a surevy and consult with the trade.

The next meeting will resolve whether or not the survey goes ahead?

Published in The Bracknell Forest Standard on 9th October 2008

TAXI drivers were celebrating after the council agreed to look into limiting the number of licensed cabs in the borough.

More taxis will lead to higher fares for punters so drivers asked the Bracknell Forest Council to cap the number of Hackney Carriage licences it issues. Licences can be given out to anyone with a suitable car who applies, under current rules. But before the council can limit the number, it must do a “significant unmet demand survey” to make sure there are enough Hackney carriages.

The council’s licensing and safety committee unanimously agreed at a meeting on Thursday to do the survey in February.

Andy Watson, of Bracknell Licensed Taxi Forum (BLTF), said after the meeting: “I am delighted. We thank the councillors for listening to us and this is a great opportunity to work with the council where in the past it has felt like a battle.

This means a lot to all the Hackney carriage drivers and could be the start of a new era in driver-councillor relations.”

The council will look into the best way to conduct the survey at minimal cost. A similar survey in Reading cost between £15,000 and £20,000, said licensing team leader Laura Driscoll. But BLTF has agreed the survey costs will be met by drivers – which may lead to a small increase in fares when the survey starts.

BLTF started to push for the survey after rising fuel prices and the credit crunch started to affect profits.

BLTF chairman John Yexley said: “Our members have suffered a big drop in income in recent years and in the present economic climate many more Hackney carriages in the town would make this even worse and put many good, long-serving taxi drivers out of business.”

Cllr Mike Beadsley, a member of the licensing panel, said: “This is serious for the trade and the residents of the borough.

“The responsibility is to make sure that residents are well served by a good taxi service.”

It wasnt a criticism.....the meeting was about having a meeting...the LO will have to presumably get the costs of surveys etc now.

Thats correct, we have a meeting next Tuesday with the L/O which will give a clear indication if he is going to support the drivers or not.
