Grim find by murder-probe officers

HUNDREDS of bottles of urine were discovered by police sent to arrest a man on suspicion of the murder of taxi-driver Stuart Ludlam.

They were found at a house in Waingroves, near Ripley, and were removed while officers carried out a search.

But, to the disgust of people living nearby, the plastic drinks bottles were then left in the street for five days.

Resident Lisa Shepherd said she was shocked to see them at the end of the road.

"There were Coca Cola bottles, Lucozade bottles and smaller ones all up against the fence," she said.

"The bottles all had their tops on but it was pretty disgusting. I have a young child and it is not what you want to see near your house."

David Pacey, also of Waingroves Road, said: "I saw them all there, but I had no idea what was inside them."

Police say "several hundred" bottles and jars were found at a house in Waingroves Road, Waingroves, on Sunday, September 27, where Colin Cheetham was arrested.

The 61-year-old has since appeared at court charged with the murder of Mr Ludlam, 43, who was found dead in the boot of his cab near Cromford Railway Station two weeks ago.

The father-of-three is believed to have died from a gunshot wound.

Derbyshire police said the plastic drinks bottles were moved to allow officers to carry out a thorough search of the house, but a "breakdown in communication" meant they were left outside afterwards.

The force has since apologised for the blunder and has removed the bottles.

Superintendent Gary Parkin said: "I would like to make a public apology to all the residents who have been subjected to the sight and smell of these bottles. They should not have been left there."

Supt Parkin added: "In all my years in policing, it still amazes me what you find and the officers at the house were faced with an extraordinary situation.

"But they should have been removed sooner. It is our responsibility.

"We now have systems in place to make sure nothing like this ever happens again."

Officers are still searching for Mr Ludlam's missing mobile phone and radio handset. They also want to trace a yellow Hackney-style cab seen in the area at the time.

Police have also arrested 11 men and one woman, aged between 18 and 48, who have either been bailed pending further inquiries or released without charge.

That could form the basis of an insanity plea if it ever goes that far

Fresh appeal over taxi driver's death

Image
POLICE APPEAL: Top, a champagne-coloured Vauxhall Omega like the one police want to trace. Above, Stuart Ludlam.

Officers investigating the death of taxi driver Stuart Ludlam have launched a fresh appeal for information.

Detectives are urging anyone who saw a champagne-coloured Vauxhall Omega in the area on the day of his death to come forward. Mr Ludlam had been shot and was found in the boot of his taxi at Cromford Railway Station.

The Omega was seen parked at the station on the day he died on Thursday, September 17.

Police also want to speak to a group of ramblers, who were spotted close to where the 43-year-old's body was found as they could hold vital clues.

The group, made up of men and women, were seen during the morning just before Mr Ludlam was found dead in the boot of his Ford Focus at around 12.40pm.

Police are appealing to the public to help them trace Mr Ludlam's white Nokia 3410 mobile phone and his radio handset, which was missing from inside the taxi. Officers are also searching for the weapon used to shoot Mr Ludlam.

Chief Supt Pete Lewis, who is leading the investigation, said: "We are extremely pleased by the number of people who have passed on information by telephone and by stopping officers on patrol.

"The support we have received from members of the public has been excellent and I would appeal to them once more to help us find these items which could assist with the investigation."

The investigation team is also still appealing for the driver of a yellow Hackney-style taxi, seen in Cromford on the day of the murder, to come forward as they could hold important information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Derbyshire police on 0345 123 33 33 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

l On Thursday, October 1, a 61-year-old man appeared in court charged with Mr Ludlam's murder.

Colin Cheetham, who was arrested in Ripley on Sunday, September 27, appeared before magistrates in Derby.

He did not enter a plea and the case was adjourned.

Cheetham, of no fixed address, was remanded in custody and will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Ammunition found by police hunting taxi driver's killer

DETECTIVES investigating the alleged murder of a Derbyshire taxi driver discovered a quantity of ammunition during a search of woodland in the county.

A spokeswoman for Derbyshire police said ammunition was found at Ambergate Woods on Friday, during a search by officers probing the death of Stuart Ludlam.

She said no further details could be released about the type or quantity of ammunition, which is being examined by forensics experts.

Meanwhile, specialist divers from Nottinghamshire Police were expected to start searching Loscoe Dam, near Heanor, this morning at the request of Derbyshire Police.

Mr Ludlam, of Darley Dale, was found shot dead in the boot of his silver Ford Focus cab at Cromford railway station, near Matlock, last month.

Yesterday, 56-year-old Andrew Brough, of Hunt Avenue, Heanor, appeared before Derby magistrates on firearms charges.

At Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court, Brough, in a a brown jumper, blue T-shirt, tracksuit bottoms and trainers, spoke briefly to give his name, date of birth and address.

He faced four charges of possessing ammunition without a certificate and one charge of possessing a weapon without a certificate.

He did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody until October 21.

Police are still trying to trace Mr Ludlam's white Nokia 3410 mobile phone and taxi radio handset, which was missing from his cab.

The body of Mr Ludlam, 43, was discovered at about 12.40pm on Thursday, September 17, on the approach road to Cromford railway station in Lea Road.

Colin Cheetham, 61, has been charged with Mr Ludlam's murder. He was remanded in custody and will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court on a date to be fixed.

Police have also arrested 12 other suspects in connection with Mr Ludlam's death.

A 27-year-old man and a man and woman, both 31, arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder, were questioned and released on bail.

Three men, aged 18, 33 and 47, were arrested in Matlock. Another two, aged 17 and 23, were also arrested in Derby.

The 18-year-old was later released without charge, while the four others were bailed pending further inquiries. A 34-year-old man arrested in Derby was also released on bail.

A 32-year-old held in the city was released without charge.

A 48-year-old Derby man taken into custody on September 18 was bailed.

And last Saturday, a 62-year-old woman was held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. She was later bailed.

Hundreds say their final farewell to man who left a 'legacy of love'

FAMILY and friends of a well-known taxi driver who was found dead with gunshot wounds turned out in their hundreds to pay their last respects at his funeral.

A service in memory of father-of-three Stuart Ludlam was held at St Helen's Church, in his home village of Darley Dale yesterday.

Pallbearers wearing Derby County scarves – the 43-year-old's favourite team – carried his coffin into the church and were followed by more than 300 mourners.

And as the service started, a burst of sunlight shone through the clouds and on to those who could not find space inside the church.

Some of the mourners, including Mr Ludlam's children, Jonathan, Matthew and Aimee, brought floral tributes.

One, written for two-year-old Aimee, read: "To dad – love you lots daddy, from Aimee. I will miss you even though I didn't know you for very long."

Two others, written by Jonathan, 15, and Matthew, 12, read: "To a best dad a son could ever want. Will miss you millions.

"To dad – you loved your friends and family, why you? Love you."

And another, from Mr Ludlam's neighbours, read: "A dear friend and neighbour – rest in peace and know we will never forget you."

The service was jointly held by the Rev Robert Quarton, of St Helen's, and the Rev Alan Dawson, of Dale Road Methodist Church.

Mr Dawson said Mr Ludlam had become a well-known face around Matlock and had left a "legacy of love" for his family.

The ministers said the community of Darley Dale and others "well beyond" were both "saddened and shocked" at Mr Ludlam's death.

Mr Ludlam, of Yew Tree Close, was a former pupil at Mortimer Wilson School, in Alfreton, and had worked at MJ's Taxis, in Middleton-by-Wirksworth, for 15 years. He was found dead in the boot of his Ford Focus estate cab outside the secluded Cromford railway station, near Matlock, on September 17.

Since his death, more than 2,330 people have joined a tribute group set up in his memory on social networking site Facebook.

One member, Amy Horobin, posted a message after the funeral. It said: "You would have been extremely proud of your gorgeous little family today. The most moving funeral and experience of my life. You know what a credit they are to you already. Hope you are taking care of them from your cloud in the sky."

Colin Cheetham, of no fixed abode, has been charged with the murder of Mr Ludlam. The 61-year-old will next appear at Nottingham Crown Court.

Last week, Andrew Brough (56), of Hunt Avenue, Heanor, appeared before Derby magistrates on firearms charges.

It would be nice to find out exactly why the killer did what he did to our colleague.

I was talking to an informed source last week.Apparently the guy is a psycho who just wanted to kill someone.Think he disliked cabbies. The police believe he had a trial run with a cab driver from Derby station a while back.Took him to a quiet spot, stopped and got out, messed around a minute, then told the driver his car was parked nearby and left. They think the driver had a lucky escape that day.
