Dundee taxi fares are set to rise by around 7% after the city’s licensing committee backed the cab trade's call for a new fares structure.

The new set-up, which has to undergo a potentially lengthy objection/appeal process, would see every journey of up to 1204 yards charged at a flat rate of £3

The new rates could be in force within two months.

At present, a sliding scale charges a minimum £2.40 and rises with distance.

The proposed new fares are the result of a consultation process where taxi trade members were asked whether they supported a council-devised structure, or one recommended by the Dundee Taxi Association (DTA) and the Unite union or no increase at all.

Licensing committee convener Rod Wallace said the consultation response was worse than expected with just 29% replying. But of the 193 responses, 94 favoured the DTA scheme, almost as many as for the two other options added together.

Mr Wallace said on Thursday, "While I am disappointed at the relatively poor return, that is the way it stands and we have to go with that position. My recommendation to the committee is to move the DTA proposals."

The DTA scheme will see the initial charge rise from £2.40 for the first 704 yards to £3 for the first 1204 yards. At present, each additional 250 yards costs 20p but this will be amended to 20p for each 233 yards.

That will have the effect of increasing the mileage rate after the first mile from £1.41 to £1.51.

There will be no change to the current charge over Christmas and New Year, which is 30p for each additional 270 yards.

In a report to committee, a number of journey scenarios was presented that showed the likely increase would be around the 7% mark, with some journeys a little above that and some below.

The rise would depend on the number of people making the journey and whether it was on a weekday or at the weekend.

The fares will be advertised next week, with a one-month objection period. If there are no objections, the fares will apply from early November. If some are raised, November 29 is the earliest date for the fares

How can firms dictate what to charge? It's the drivers who are out there working for nothing earning the firms money via radio rents.

Agreed but anyone can object. It's up to the council how they deal with any objections.

Can people power get Council Tax reduced?

I find it incredible that Dundee City Council has agreed to the Dundee Taxi Association’s view that drivers should receive fare increases of 7% — when their own recommendation was between 3-4%, still ahead of the recognised levels of inflation.
And before the hard-done by taxi drivers jump on the bandwagon — I know of some drivers who can earn between £600-£800 for two 12-hour shifts over the weekend.

I was astonished that this figure was accepted in these hard-pressed times. Are we seriously to believe that when the council sets the next round of Council Tax levels, that we, the Dundee people, can make counter suggestions to have that rate lowered?

Why don’t we form a Dundee People’s Association and use that sway of public opinion to engineer rates of levy or charges to suit our own interests? — Vote For Change.
Letter in the local press

Is this ar$e on bubbles ????
