Customers are becoming more discerning in what they pay for and they won't want to pay for a smelly, unkempt taxi driven by a driver who doesn't give a sh*t.

And they should, but how many people refuse to get into the first cab on the rank because the driver is iffy? :?

I'm not sure I agree with you.

But the magic pills to all our smelly/rude/dirty/stupid/ etc woes is not more teaching, just more enforcement.

If we could spend 10%, of the money being spent on these college courses, on extra enforcement, then things would get a hell of a lot better for punters, and of course for drivers.

When local authorities start giving school runs to those with qualifications.....like some are starting to do now as part of the tender process.

When the larger profitable accounts start asking for qualifications....as some do now as part of the tender process.

When health authorities start to ask for qualifications.....as part of their tender processes.

And when the private hire companies have all the above accounts because they see these courses different to the HC trade.....a HC trade who seem to believe buying a plate means they are instantly businessmen and professionals.

Perhaps the HC trade will still be happy....with the general public view....which is most people only drive taxis because they failed at something else.

Personally, I dont think many taxi drivers like being viewed as that.

NVQ? what a load of B..lo..s!!!! the only people who will benefit from this latest Government/Council scam are the jobsworths who dreamed it up, justifying their jobs and making sure they get another year of gold topped up pensions along with there 2.9% salary increase while managing to job share and run a licensing office with availability Tue /Thur 10.00 - 12.00 and 14.00 - 16.00 appointment required, That's in York anyway, you have more chance of contacting / finding Bin Larden than a Taxi Licensing officer in York outside them 4 hours twice a week.
And of course the others to benefit are those wonderful assessors, who have used their position in the trade to scare monger while doing the basic i week teaching course (Hull Uni £176.00) if you paid for it. With the attitude this is a nice little earner for doing nothing, and a ready made market.
How on earth can someone who has hardly been in the job 5 mins and does a quick meet and greet with a touch of H&S course thrown in, expect to get respect and taken seriously as a teacher from people who have done the job with many more years experience and have never had 1 complaint against them in fact just the opposite.
With regards to a assessor sitting in my car and judging my driving skills, no problem at all, but i do hope their's meet the legal requirement at all times, i would hate to see them speeding or failing to adhere to road traffic regulations while carrying passengers or empty, not that i will be looking out for this much, Not!!!!!!
Communication skills, that's interesting, Now given that over the years i have the dis-pleasure of hearing our certain drivers give their opinions and philosophy of customers service skills and the way they have dealt with them, i am quite looking forward to that part of the NVQ course, always fancied doing amateur boxing and how to be a winner in confrontational situations.

Then the course when you have to take it will be a piece of p*ss

Is english your first language btw?

Ok I shouldn't have said what I did perhaps you don't all have that bad attitude I mentioned earlier. To believe that just because I decided to use such language as a way to express myself doesn't make me a fit person to assess somebody is a feeble excuse.

My qualifications make me able to do what I do. It doesn't make better than anybody else it just enables me to do more. Qualifications gives ME more choices in life. The more qualifications I have the more choices I can make. :D

The problem is that those who do not NEED the "training" are those that feel victimised by it, while those who do need training hide behind them hoping they can convince the authorities that its not a good idea.

If those who didn't need to do the qualification actually did it then it would force those who need it to do it.

This attitude of "I don't need it" doesn't deflect from the fact that some do.

Oh and what recognition do you get for the professional service you provide? What changes the publics perception of our industry?

The people who don't have your standards are considered to be the same as you at best ................ and you are considered the same as them at worst.

Support improvement.

B. Lucky :D

I merely answered with a quotation what you wrote....if you dont like me answering....thats fine...I'll stop.

And that's fine also if whats mooted wont affect you.....I dont really give a sh*t.

Whether the HC like it or not....someone who knows zero about the job has already in some areas made a decision regarding local authority work.

Similar things are happening in respects to other account work.

The public perception of the cab trade is also a fact....we are seen as a second class occupation, something people fall back into between proper jobs.

The majority will still give the contract to the cheapest bidder, the best backhander or their friends and family, just as they have always done.
I doubt a few qualifications will change that.
