For what its worth I thought JD actually asked a reasonable question.

Are the other local authorities licensing death trap vehicles with pervert drivers?

Reading through the thread the standards are broadly similar, the contentious part is the allocation of work to licensees licensed outside the area.

Why, when I saw the ID Billy Smart did I immediately think "clown"?

Yes, there is a problem with multiple IDs, you see it's mainly down to troublemakers who just don't get the message that their lies and smears aren't welcome, but they just can't keep away

Some have even set up their own forums, so if you don't like it on here Billy then why post on some of the alternatives - they could certainly do with a few new members

BTW, anyone who has read the forum for a while would know that TDO and Dusty are the same person and that I don't use both IDs and further that I was quite open about changing my ID.

I'm inclined to agree; there's been little evidence provided that's there's a substantive mismatch between the standards.

Are drivers in the other authorities not vetted, for example?

Is there evidence of any detriment to taxi users from the scenario described?

For what its worth so did I but what turned out as a simple request for an explanation as to the reasoning behind the "Standards issue", seems to have caused somewhat of a furore?

If as suggested Brighton's standards are so far superior to those of the surrounding authorities then it shouldn't be too difficult to prove why? So far only BrightonBreezy has been good enough to offer an explanation as to why he thinks Brighton's vehicle standards are superior but it would appear his observations are based solely on the cut off age of the licensed vehicle and not on the actual standards that these vehicles have to pass, in order to obtain a license?

If the suggestion is that standards are based solely on the age of a vehicle and not the mechanical condition of the vehicle then perhaps the GMB should have pointed this out? However as we all know a vehicle aged 7 that has done 300,000 miles might not be mechanically superior to a vehicle aged 8 or 9 that has only done 150,000 miles. My point is that it is misleading to base the artificial reasoning of standards on vehicle age because of the example I have just given. Furthermore standards are those which vehicles and drivers are first meant to obtain and subsequently keep them maintained to the correct standard.

Is the GMB saying that an equivalent aged vehicle in Adur to that of Brighton will not pass the Brighton TEST?

The actual "standard" is the test, the age of the vehicle is not the standard.

I'm also wondering if the GMB studied comparable evidence of first time test failure rate in each authority, before they issued this statement?

In respect of Drivers I know that Brighton and Adur first placed the prospect of the DSA test before their respective licensing committees in April 2005 and now both authorities have adopted the test. I understand Brighton has a adopted a license conditions test as part of their knowledge but I doubt that in itself would make drivers from Adur inferior as to the standard of driver? Therefore my immediate reaction to the possible flaws in this press release in relation to the word "Standards" was probably well founded.

I think the whole episode was designed to taint these three authorities in order that Brighton council could be persuaded to only use Brighton vehicles for the type of contract work mentioned.

I'm not going to get into the politics of contracts etc. but in my pursuit of accuracy and fairness it would be nice to see those who have something to say about the Taxi trade, actually making factual comments whether it be in respect of their own licensed area or somewhere else?

I feel it was irresponsible to make accusations about "standards" without first defining what those standards are and how they differ from one authority to the other?

In the majority of UK authorities you can probably throw a blanket over the differring standards because they are that minimal.

I did say the majority of authorities.

I think you will find that this opinion is yours and yours alone. What ever problems you have with Terry should be between you and Terry. B&H GMB PDB is there to assist its members, in what ever way it can.
