The one thing that has helped greatly in Brum is marshalled cab ranks on weekend nights. I don't know if you have them in Edinburgh. Usually, there is very little waiting times for passengers on these marshalled ranks, but at times when the wait can be up to 15-20 minutes at these ranks, because of very heavy traffic stopping empty cabs getting to these ranks, the fact that those in the rank queue know that they will eventually get a cab & more importantly, KNOW THEY ARE SAFE WHILST WAITING IN THE TAXI RANK QUEUE WITH OTHERS, has been a great success, both for safety of the public & public order management.

We also have Street Wardens working at weekend nights & they discourage the public from flagging down cabs & direct them to the marshalled ranks instead, & they also try & discourage cabbies from picking up flagdowns, though these are not thing that I am at ease with.

If you don't have marshalled taxi ranks in Edinburgh on weekend nights, perhaps it might be a good idea to approach the council to see if such a scheme could be introduced.

And also, I was only thinking as I was working last night, when the last time was that I had my cab kicked by an irate weekend reveller, & I just can't remember when that was, it was so long ago. And I put that down to the marshalled rank system, because that ensures passengers will eventually get a cab & don't get frustrated.

As for the shortage of Hackneys in Edinburgh, that is a separate issue, & I do know it has a bearing on weekend supply. But I have always believed that each LA & the cabbies & drivers in those LAs have to come to their own unique resolutions to the question of Hackney Cariage licence issues.

It seems fairly obvious that neither CC Brummie or Mr T give a [edited by admin] about women being made vulnerable to rape because they can't get a taxi. Not unlike those elected to the council of our local authority - this is all about protecting vested interests.

Why don't we have adequate signage for PH rather than proper licensed Taxis.

Good one CC

Cracks in Edinburgh Pavements Drive Crazy People Insane

Edinburgh council has come under fire from mental patients at ECC Asylum over the poor condition of the city's pavements.

"Most of our patients cannae cope with the cracks in the pavement", said the asylum's chief medical officer, "it's real hard going about your business when you have to try and avoid all those cracks - especially when there's nowhere without cracks".

We spoke to Jim, a 64 year old homeless, speed-freak, loony who freaks out at the mere thought of stepping on a crack.

"How's a dude supposed to walk about town, wee mon?", said a clearly distraught Jim, "A guy like me could fall through one of those sucka's if he aint careful where he's steppin, I blame the general lack of taxis, brought about by the fascists within the toon hall'".

Edinburgh Mayor Councillor Smith has issued a statement saying that he will put systems in place to prevent any citizen falling through the cracks.

How can you make a comment like that when marshalled taxi ranks, throughout England, have proved a resounding success since their introduction???

Where were your marshals when this wee lassie was getting raped?

Oh and btw, would you stand in a rank waiting for a taxi? I know I wouldn't.

Aye but who wants to rape you? Brummie perhaps? Now I know why you'd rather wait at ranks.

If you don't have marshalled ranks in Edinburgh then that is part of the public order problem with the public hiring cabs, on busy weekends. I suggest you tackle the issue with your council; your vociferous enough to do it, & I have great faith in you pulling this off!!!

As for waiting for a taxi at a marshalled rank; well thousands do in Birmingham every weekend, & hundreds of thousands do, all around England at busy weekends.

As I have said before, it's the public that counts, not what you would do, or me for that matter.

I can't help but get the feeling that you've not had much to do with politicians?

They don't have answers CC ....................... only unrelated arguments manipulated to further their cause.

The mentality that the world owes them everything for nothing has no decent boundries.

Maybe the slap that Skull was supposed to have got wasn't enough to knock some sense into him .............. still glad to see he's ok.

B. Lucky :D
