We'd all love for that to be bought back especially for sex offenders and child molesters. The Police need a kick up the backside first, without that there will be innocent people put to death.

Moment of Reflection - Sixteen-year-old Jono Ludlam and his younger brother Matt, 13,
remember their father, taxi driver Stuart Ludlam as a plaque is unveiled at Matlock Bus Station.

The mother of murdered cabbie Stuart Ludlam has spoken of her immense pride in her grandsons, who unveiled a plaque in memory of their father in Matlock at the weekend.

Jonathan Ludlam, 16, and Matthew Ludlam, 13, helped organise the memorial ceremony on Saturday morning – one year on from the 43-year-old M.J’s Taxis driver being shot dead at Cromford Station.

Stuart’s mum Sheila Ludlam said: “Matlock mayor Steve Flitter presented the plaque to Jonathan and Matthew and they put it on a bench.

“I was very proud of them for doing that. It was a special moment.

“That’s the first time for them really to remember their dad in public like that and they wanted to do it.”

Sheila, 66, said the ceremony at Bakewell Road taxi rank was another important step as her family attempts to come to terms with Stuart’s death.

Sheila said: “The day went very well. It wasn’t a sad day and it was beautiful weather – Stuart always seems to bring the sunshine out.

“It has soon gone a year and Saturday was a sort of closure in a sad way. But we shall never forget Stuart – none of us could ever forget him.”

Friends, relatives, colleagues and sympathetic residents attended the event, which included a minute’s silence and the laying of flowers at the father-of-three’s old taxi rank.

Stuart’s widow Paula, 43, held their three-year-old daughter Aimee and laid flowers.

And Stuart’s former bosses Mike and Tracey Shelton – who had planned to retire and give their firm to Stuart to say thank you for 15 years of dedicated service – were there too.

The engraving on the plaque reads: “In loving memory of Stuart Ludlam. Taxi driver of Matlock. Badly missed by all who knew him.”

Gun fanatic Colin Cheetham, of Waingroves Road in Ripley, was sentenced in June to a minimum of 30 years in prison for Stuart’s murder.

He had been plotting for months to lure a cabbie to a remote location and execute them.

Stuart Ludlam was Cheetham’s random victim on Thursday, September 17, 2009.

DIED BEHIND BARS ‘Evil’ gun fanatic who killed an innocent taxi driver for the ‘thrill’ dies in jail

A gun fanatic who killed an innocent taxi driver for the "thrill" has died in jail. Colin Cheetham, 81, passed away in the healthcare unit at maximum security Wakefield prison in West Yorkshire.

Cheetham was convicted in 2010 of luring taxi driver Stuart Ludlam, 43, to an isolated train station and executing him. The former gun club member had been planning the cold-hearted killing for years.

He ordered a taxi to meet him at Cronford station, Derbyshire, on 17th September 2009. Cheetham did not know father-of-three Mr Ludlam.

When the cab arrived, he fired at him through the rear windscreen, hitting him in the head and injuring him. Mr Ludlam was marched to the back of the cab and forced to kneel before being shot in the head execution-style. His body was found by horrified holidaymakers who saw his lifeless arm hanging out of the car with the engine still running.

Baffled cops tracked down Cheetham after tracing a mobile used to call MJ's taxi firm. The pay-as-you go mobile had been bought with cash, but Cheetham had used his credit card to top it up.

Cheetham, who owned a firearms license, denied murder and blamed two other fictitious men. He acknowledged the fatal shot had been from a gun he owned. A jury convicted him after a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

He was jailed for a minimum of 30-years.

Cheetham had been ill for the last few years, and is not believed to have tested positive for covid-19. A Prison Service spokesperson said: "HMP Wakefield prisoner Colin Cheetham died in prison on 1 May. “As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”

Following Cheetham's arrested, police raided his home in Ripley, Derbyshire, and discovered train timetables and photos of train stations. During the trial prosecutor Peter Joyce QC said that Cheetham appeared to have no motive other than the desire to shoot a “complete stranger”.

Detective Chief Superintendent Tony Blockley, of Derbyshire Police, said at the time: “Colin Cheetham is an evil man who carried out a despicable act which was seemingly motiveless. “This crime was totally unpredictable. My view is that he has executed Mr Ludlam simply to see what it would be like to kill someone.”

Mr Ludlam's mother, Sheila Ludlam, said after the verdict the family had been devastated by the killing. "Three children for him and three grandchildren for me and he loved them with all his heart. "All he wanted was a little girl - he got his little girl but of course she hasn't got a daddy any more."

I hope his family are sleeping a bit better tonight.

His death will only serve to remind his victims of what he took away from them the bloke was pure evil
