Police were stepping up their hunt for a taxi driver this weekend in connection with a road accident that has left a man in hospital with severe head injuries.

Anthony Smith, 24, from Long Eaton, was seen leaning into a taxi window at the roadside before the vehicle moved off, dragging him around 20 metres along Canal Street, between Via Fossa pub, and the Evening Post building.

Mr Smith fell into the road and was later taken to the Queen's Medical Centre suffering from serious head injuries.

He remains in a critical condition.

Yesterday, his parents, Charles and Margaret Smith, issued an emotional plea for information about the incident which took place around 1.15am last Saturday.

"The jigsaw needs to be brought together. Anyone with a little bit of information will help the police and put our minds at rest," Mrs Smith said.

"Anthony's so happy-go-lucky. He has so many friends and is such a lovable character. He's got a big grin in every photo we have of him."

Detective Inspector Adrian Morgan, of Central CID, said that the taxi driver may not be aware of Anthony's injuries.

He said: "Our thoughts are with Anthony's family at this time. It is vital that we speak to anyone who may have information about what happened to him."

All calls to DI Morgan and DS Lee Davies on 0115 967 0999 ext: 5133.
