Perhaps they want to decrease taxi numbers by having a ballot.
Then the ones who lose will then hand back their plates and go and work for the winners.

Has this article ever been highlighted previously? http://www.tgwu.org.uk/Templates/News.asp?NodeID=91140 Gateshead TGWU Taxi drivers Recruit TGWU researcher Roger Sealey to put the case to Gateshead Council for re-restricting numbers. Roger Sealey was the TGWU rep who came out with the following classic statement at the Select tCommittee hearing. He said........ "It might be interesting to conduct surveys on unmet demand in derestricted areas rather than in restricted areas. Our evidence is that unmet demand is happening in those areas, in Birmingham, for example. I was talking to somebody today who was saying that there is significant unmet demand at night now because taxi drivers are working the day shift and there are not sufficient working the night shift because the market has been derestricted" Best Wishes JD |

I suspect thats the 24 thousand dollar question. One would have thought the natural solution would be to increase the number of Taxis but Mr Sealey is not known for his natural ability to reason, he is known more for his abilty to bullshit. I suspect he told Gateshead council that more cabs equates to a worse service for the public of Gateshead. Best wishes JD |
