Taxis protest at police station after arrest

A FLEET of taxis descended on a Sheffield police station after a cabbie was arrested on Sunday night.

Around 80 black cabs parked up outside West Bar Police Station and along Scotland Street to protest after the unnamed driver was arrested in the city centre.

Taxi Drivers' Association Chairman Hafeas Rehman said the protest had not been arranged by the association but he was aware that it had been staged.

He said: "The word went out that a driver had been arrested in the city centre following a complaint from a member of the public.

"I do not know what the complaint was.

"It appears that a friend of the driver then started calling round to other drivers who drove to the police station to protest.

"They dispersed once the driver had been interviewed and released.

"The whole thing lasted around half an hour."

A police spokesperson confirmed that a taxi driver had been arrested in Barkers Pool at around 7.20pm on Sunday after allegations were made that he had committed a public order offence. He was not charged and was released on police bail soon after being questioned.

The police say they are continuing to make inquiries into the alleged incident.

Anyone with information should contact Sergeant Darren Nugent at the City Centre Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0114 2523054.
