Cig case cabbie on drink-drive charge
A Lancashire cabbie who avoided prosecution under anti-smoking legislation has been charged with drink driving.
Peter Cowley, from Hopwood Street, Bamber Bridge, was arrested after he was involved in a collision in St Mary's Road, Bamber Bridge.
The 54-year-old has been suspended by South Ribble Council until the case comes to court.
The cabbie, who works for Preston-based Miller's Taxis, is accused of drink driving, having no insurance, no MOT certificate and not driving in accordance with his licence.
He was arrested at 9.40pm on Saturday after the Skoda Octavia he was driving collided with a green Rover. He was not working at the time.
A police spokesman said the Rover suffered "extensive damage" to the rear and the road was blocked until recovery teams shifted the wreckage.
The occupants were taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by paramedics but later discharged.
The spokesman said: "A man was arrested at the scene for driving with excess alcohol.
"He has been charged with driving while unfit through drink, driving a motor vehicle otherwise in accordance with his licence, driving with no insurance and without a test certificate."
He will appear before South Ribble Magistrates Court on November 27.
If convicted he could face a prison sentence, driving ban, fine and the revocation of his taxi licence.
Peter Osbourne, managing director of Miller's, said he could not comment as he was not in full possession of the facts.
He said he had not been able to contact Mr Cowley since the incident.
Mr Cowley hit the headlines after he became the first person in
Lancashire to successfully defend himself against a charge of smoking in a smoke-free place.
The Evening Post reported how he was hauled before the courts after he refused to pay a fixed penalty notice issued in the car park of Tesco Extra in Leyland after he was apparently seen throwing a lit cigarette from his cab.
But he successfully argued he had not been smoking at the time, in April this year.
