Dear Editor

I was recently in the Scottish Borders with my wheelchair bound wife and I have to advise the facilities in your region for the disabled are amongst the worst I've seen in the entire country!

Has the 1995 DDA act not arrived in the Scottish Borders yet?

The facilities provided by the alleged public transport system are a complete disgrace, not a single taxi company was able to transport us without man-handling my wife into a totally unsuitable saloon vehicle.

If your region is to attract visitors it needs to address this problem.

There are a number of WAV available mainly owned by one company that claims to have 150 vehicles and advertises the fact on radio boredom

Dunno why...theres Plenty such vehicles about in the borders and more still from various disabilty groups..maybe the huge size of the Borders region with its low density of Population means that even though the WAV to non WAV ratio is probably the same as anywhere else but because of the spread out nature of the borders you were simply unable to find one....

Council facing court over wheelchair cabs


A wheelchair user is to challenge Liverpool City Council in the High Court after a committee refused to license a wheelchair-friendly taxi.

The council's decision not to license the Peugeot E7 taxi provoked a protest from some local disability campaigners and wheelchair user Alma Lunt has won the right to challenge the ruling through a judicial review.

The protesters said wheelchair users experience difficulty and feel unsafe in regular style cabs and claim the purpose-built E7 is easier to use.

Mrs Lunt said: "In the smaller passenger area of the London style cab there isn't space for larger wheelchairs to be secured and as a result many of us are bumped about, bruised and injured".

She added: "Liverpool's licensing policy is extraordinary. Detailed and accurate information, including the terrible experiences of many wheelchair users was kept from the committee, we hardly had a chance for our voices to be heard in the meetings."

A meeting of the comittee heard that "the public could reasonably be expected to be unfamiliar with the operation of sliding doors" and the elderly and infirm might find them "cumbersome and awkward".

John Bruce, from Wheelchair Users Group, said: "We are delighted that the High Court has ruled on the importance of this legal challenge for accessible transport and licensing the E7 will help remove a major barrier to safer travel and will not cost Liverpool rate payers anything."

A council spokeswoman declined to comment because the case is subject to legal proceedings. He did however state "At least we have wheelchair Taxis here, have you ever been to the Scottish Borders? Well I havent but I'm assured the provision is Sh*t, apparently taxi owners there are allowed the choice, and choose not to have any".

Wheelchair user where also informed that they could now get a saloon taxi from the rank at Carlisle station, rather than be thrown about in one of those bone shakers made by LTI.
This was all brought about by a taxi driver from the Scottish borders and others from a taxi drivers web site namely TDO, who with there good knowledge of taxi laws finally convinced the council that they had had the wool pulled over there eyes when the so called leader of the close knit taxi association convinced them that only WAVs could legally pick up there.
We are lead to belive that MR @rsehole CC come close to loosing his licence over these ilegal shenanigans
