Taxi row man threatened to ‘slice’ cabbie over fare
Last updated 12:22, Monday, 19 January 2009

A BARROW man threatened a taxi driver when he stopped the meter to let him out, just yards from his home.

Mark Robert Nelson Gibbons, 27, of Salthouse Road, Barrow, caused William Clark to fear for his safety after accusing him of tampering with the meter on December 26 last year.

Gibbons pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour towards Mr Clark at Furness Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

Miss Lisa O’Loughlin, prosecuting, said Mr Clark was a licensed taxi driver working for A1 Taxis. At 11.10pm, he was directed to Duke Street to pick up a pre-booked fare in the name of Gibbons.

When he was picked up, Gibbons sat in the front and said he wanted to go to Salthouse Road, but only had £5.40 and asked if he could be taken as far as that amount would take him.

Mr Clark said that amount would probably be enough.

Miss O’Loughlin said: “He was taken to Salthouse Road and at the Roose Road railway bridge he (Mr Clark) turned off the meter.

“It was only a matter of yards from Mr Gibbons’ house. He became objectionable and said he (Mr Clark) had tampered with the meter.

“He became aggressive and abusive and made threats of physical violence, causing him to fear for his safety.

“He said he would ‘slice him’ and ‘do him’.”

The fare remained unpaid and Mr Clark called for help on his radio.

Miss O’Loughlin added: “Mr Gibbons left the vehicle, leaving Mr Clark in a shaken and upset state.”

Gibbons was arrested on December 30 and said when interviewed he had been drinking in the afternoon and agreed he had been in the wrong.

He was shown CCTV footage from inside the taxi and said he was ashamed and very remorseful for how he had acted. When bailed, he had handed in £10 at the taxi office and had written a letter of apology.

Gibbons, defending himself, apologised to the court, and said: “I find what I have done disgusting. Over the last two years since I was last in court I’ve beaten addiction to cocaine and alcohol and have a three-year-old child who I’m trying to set a good example to.

“That was the first time I had been out for 16 months.”

Sentencing him to a 7pm-to-7am curfew for four months, presiding magistrate Sue Needham said: “It is a serious matter. This was somebody serving the public and we don’t take these things lightly.”

He was also ordered to pay £100 compensation to Mr Clark and £30 towards court costs.

Would this have reached court without the CCTV evidence? [-(
