A MAN was seen walking on a major North-east road shortly before being knocked down and killed by a taxi.
Lawrence Osborne, 66, was on his way home when the crash happened.
The pensioner died at the scene of the accident and the driver of the silver Volkswagon Passat taxi was treated in hospital for shock.
Police were today trying to piece together the last movements of Mr Osborne, who lived in the Moray village of Lhanbryde.
The crash happened on the A96 Aberdeen to Elgin road, just outside Elgin, around 1.20am yesterday.
Sergeant David Pirie, who is leading the investigation, said before the crash motorists were trying to warn other drivers Mr Osborne was on the road.
He said: "Some motorists flashed their lights to warn other drivers there was a pedestrian on the road. We would be keen to speak to anyone who saw him."
Sgt Pirie said Mr Osborne was wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident.
Police were today appealing for witnesses who may have seen the pensioner before the collision to come forward.
Meanwhile, three people were hurt following a two-car crash near Balmedie.
The incident involving a grey Rover and a silver Citroen happened on the A90 Aberdeen to Ellon Road around 10.20pm yesterday.
One woman was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment but her injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
