Dewsbury taxi driver who delivered gun is jailed for three years

A TAXI driver who delivered a gun in a car park was watched by police.

Shazad Hussain, of Heckmondwike Road in Dewsbury, admitted conspiracy to possess a prohibited weapon and was jailed for three years.

Leeds Crown Court heard the 28-year-old was seen on December 17, 2007, pulling into the car park in his private hire Vauxhall Vectra.

He met accomplices in the snooker club car park in Heckmondwike to pick up the 9mm hand gun.

Officers were watching when a man got out of a Land Cruiser and sat in the front seat of Hussain’s car.

As he got out he was seen putting something under his clothes.

Andrew Dallas, prosecuting, said Hussain was traced through his vehicle.

The blank-firing Russian pistol was found to be fitted complete with thread to accept the silencer.

Mr Dallas said it had been converted “with lethal potential”.

Tests showed the gun was not linked to any further crime.

The three other men involved, Khalid Mahmood from Bradford, Usman Bari from Hull and an unnamed man were jailed for four years.

Elyas Patel, defending, said Hussain realised he had been stupid and gullible to get involved and agreeing to deliver the weapon in his taxi.

I bet thats one fare he wished he'd refused !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He was gulible for using his taxi??? Does that mean he should have used an ordinary car and it would have been OK? After all the did catch him by tracing his taxi.

if it had been packaged and the driver had no idea what was in the box, id guess he would have been innocent, being found guilty infers he knew quite well what the item was

so why only 3 years?

when gun crime is on the up, why only 3 years? i wonder who wanted the gun and for what purpose.

having/carrying a gun should carry a minimum of 10 years

add knives and drugs to that as well, and at the risk of being labelled a ne-nazi BNP member again.....

is it just me thats noticed most gun/knife/drugs crimes seem to involve, shall we say, non-whites? (though there are plenty of whites also involved)

TBH I hadn't noticed. Mostly white criminals here with regards to guns and knives. The fact that knife attacks here seem quite random rather than personal is a concern

Gun crime is relatively rare here, but knife and drug crimes involve scumbags of all racial groups.

Not too unique....cant remember any instances around here that spring to mind....well involving ethnic minorities anyway.

Dundee does not have any gun crime but has a lot of problems with drugs .The funny thing is that the junkies are big taxi users and most do not give you any problems.

How so? Do you have a high crime rate in Lichfield?

Strange you have these views wannabe....if you come from lichfield your population is around 30K.

98.1% of people are white....compared to the national average of 90% in the rest of the UK.

I wonder how you come to your conclusions? I trust you read the daily mail?

Pretty much the same here. Junkies don't want to draw attention to their activities so by and large, they don't cause trouble in cabs.
There are one or two exceptions.
